So Im planning to start my freshmen year (Fall 2012) at SMC.
Im going to take the assessment test soon, but I really dont know what to do next. I mean is it better to take the igetc courses or stick to one school's requirement for transferring.

My first choice of transferring is to UCB, and probably a safety might be LMU/USC. I heard UCLA is "easy" but im not going to believe that and work my ass off.
Just to remind you that my highschool gpa was very low. (3.0) and because of that i really dont know what to do once i really get starting on my college courses.

Another thing is about Stanford. I havent heard any students who transferred from SMC to Stanford. (probably because its beyond impossible?) I know they only pick like 30-50 students but is it still possible?

Can someone give me any advice for selecting courses at SMC for transferring?

IGETC courses will many times overlap with General Ed requirements for other colleges. I know for USC, you can fulfill IGETC and USC General Ed at the same time by choosing a class from each Gen Ed category that corresponds to both IGETC and USC requirements. For example, at LA City College, “English 203, World Literature I” fulfills both the IGETC Arts/Humanities requirement and the USC Arts/Culture requirement.

So it’s all about comparing the Gen Ed requirements for each of the schools you want to transfer to and being wise with your choice in classes. I would get started right away looking at the IGETC schedule of classes and the USC General Ed Articulation for SMC, in addition to transfer requirements for other schools.

Also, demand for classes at SMC is high and supply is low. So register right away and/or try to look into enrolling into any special programs that give priority class registration.

Do you know how long it takes to complete IGETC? one year as in (fall + spring semester) ?

Hey, jawaiian8! What are you planning on majoring in?

The school counselor(s) might recommend IGETC for you, anyway, if you want to go to a UC or something like that. Someone told me to take my math/english or english/math courses first. Might be a good idea, since you’re going to be tested on those subjects anyway. Hope this helps!
