SMG Freshman Willing to Answer Questions

Hey everyone! I’m currently an honors program freshman at SMG and would be happy to answer questions about that school, or BU in general. So far I am very happy here; it’s a great place with great people, I don’t know what else I could ask for :-)

Love to find out how BU SMG is these days. DD is applying for Fall 2006 RD.
What dorm do you live in and are you happy there? How is the workload? Is it very challenging? Do you have time for a social life? Do you like your classes and your professors? Are you happy that you chose SMG or do you now want to change majors/schools?

"Do you have time for a social life?"

Freshman year, sure.

Sophomore year, yes.

Junior year: not a chance.

Senior year: depends.

I currently have a 3.86 GPA and unfortunately a 1740 (640 M, 520 CR, 580 W - hoping to improve this weekend). My class rank is 25/213. Do I still have a good chance of getting into SMG?

I live in Towers and although it's no palace by any means, I like it a lot. The people on my floor are fantastic and it's the best possible location for SMG. If your daughter does decide to go to SMG, I recommend she try to get into Towers or Warren for the freshman atmosphere and close proximity to SMG.

So far the workload is challenging but not unmanageable. We do have SMG classes A LOT (about 9 hours per week) but the assignments have been very helpful I think and not unbelievably difficult. If you want to succeed here though, you do need to put in the time and go to every class.

Right now I definitely have time for a social life, but as Ryan said above that will probably change junior year.

I am pretty happy with my classes and professors. The professor who does our main lecture (Morrison) is fantastic and my discussion professor is pretty good too. Non-SMG professors vary; for example, my microeconomics lecturer is deadly dull boring.

I am happy at the moment that I chose SMG. I was torn between applying here or COM and I think for now I made the right choice. I am enjoying the Honors Program activites as well so if your daughter has a chance to do that I highly recommend it. When I was choosing which college to attend it was basically between BU's SMG, NYU Stern, and GWU's Business program. I know Stern is more highly rated, but I came to BU because of a generous scholarship and am so far glad that I did so.

I hope that helps and feel free to email or IM me with anymore questions you might have; I'm on AIM @ kiki81ny.

You do have a shot, but I would definitely try to raise that SAT score, it's low for SMG and they might stick you in the College of General Studies instead. Your GPA is good though and your rank decent; raise those SATs and keep up your extracurriculars and you'll have a shot.

BU and UF are DD's second choice schools, first is Emory. I went to BU 25 years ago and lived in Towers for 2 years. I really liked that dorm and never wished i was in Warren...but after reading ryanbis's posts, I was wondering if she would have a better freshman experience in Warren. Glad to hear that Towers is still good. I was in S0N, which, is now gone. DD's stats are not high enough for honors...but she is a definite match for SMG, so as a legacy, she should get in. We will revisit the school this winter to determine if it is really right for her.
