mjf-- the school has like 10-11% freshmen. That means about 44% of smith graduating students entered the school freshman year. Maybe even less for all those who decide to transfer out. The average SAT was 1360 and the average GPA is a 3.9(i assume weighted)

thanks for the response cheapseats

so is being in the smith school as a freshman much different then being a freshman in arts and sciences? people still hang out iwht kids outside of their school and stuff like that? and with classes, will I be taking more business classes right of the bat because of this or am I still pretty much going to be taking the same classes as all the other frosh? just curious

you won't have a different experience as a freshman AT ALL by being directly admitted into the business school. nobody only hangs out with people in their school.....it just doesn't work that way. your first couple semesters you won't even be taking that many business classes anyway. the classes you'll be taking as an undergrad are mostly CORE classes, like all other freshmen. classes in the business school are pretty much the same as you'd be taking if you were in letters & sciences and trying to transfer into the business school.

the advantage: once you finish those 200-level business classes, you can start taking your upper-level business classes right away (and not have to wait for your junior year to transfer in and take them). also, you'll get a business school advisor right away which is great.

How will this affect Smith's ranking?? http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/content/apr2006/bs20060417_3272.htm?campaign_id=search

Business week is making their own ranking but I think it will destroy public schools. It assesses "academic quality [by] faculty-student ratios and average SAT scores". That messes up state schools. The student ratios are higher and the schools are easier to get into. My problem is that these rankings will then in turn mess up USnews rankings as that is based on prestige and this will build it for the schools they rank high which will be private, small, and highly selective. Quality doesn't translate to difficulty of getting into a school. We'll see but UMD's ranking seems like it will fall. The SAT of a 1360 is not as low as other State schools ahead of it like OSU Arizona, PSU, UM-TC, or even IU. All those schools will fall in "academic quality" also.

I do like the fact based things though. I mean the average salary stats are great. I just hope people don't see these rankings as 1, 2, 3, and 4 but more as a grouping of several factors that can be reevaluated by the reader. So, if class size is important they can adjust accordingly and if salary is important they can also adjust accordingly.

cheapseats & everyone else on this message board -- nobody really pays much attention to those rankings except collegeconfidential posters and their parents. honestly. :P

no worries

i guess for those in the schools it doesn't really matter but high school seniors have nothing else to measure the schools by. There are just so many schools to evaluate so if someone said here are the top 25 in your major it makes it much easier to make a list of schools. After a list is made of 5 or 6 schools people can go beyond rankings but to get those top 6 rankings are extremely important. For anyone interested here are the top 25 in the poll. UMD did fall out of the top 25.

agreed....but is there really that big of a difference between (for example) #4 and #7, or #22 and #26? probably not. concentrating on rankings when choosing schools to apply to is one thing, but picking a school because it is ranked 2 spots higher than another, even if you might like it a little bit less than the lower-ranked school.....well that's just ridiculous.

not saying that anyone here is doing that, just the idea kind of bothers me.
my $.02

....that poll is retarded. someone from richmond is obviously spamming.

I agree Dylin88-- Richmond is a teeny weeny school. TOTAL incoming freshman class for next year is 750. How many of those are in the business school? Not sure, but I can find out. Hope someone catches this...........................unreal.........

there they are

UMD is a cool 36. A great thing is a section for each school. UMD's is here

On the link above you can click the student comments tab to read this short description. The student regrets going to maryland. You can just click this link to read it

For those of you who are into analyzing rankings - going down to the wire - check out this UMCP webpage where they show their rankings:

yeah all of those rankings are pretty good but they are all for graduate school. Those rankings are pretty reliable because they come from USnews but some hate that system of ranking too.

hey i am going in as undecided next year...how hard will it be for me to transfer into the business program?

joelle - read my reply to your post in another thread.

someone in the chats said that if you have a 1300+ they will consider you for the business school and a switch of majors, if you have a 1300 just ask the admissions for a switch of major now but don't say i have a 1300 switch me but tell them you would like a switch. Send an e-mail to admissions and tell them that you haven't taken any classes and you are an entering freshman. Maybe it'll work out so you don't have to wait 2 years. If you don't have a 1300 still ask but if it doesn't work out see if you can join markets and society and that would lead you to a path to smith.

Quick, although possibly stupid question are there any classes that someone that is not in the smith school cant take? Like if my friend didnt get in can he still take whatever classes he wants?

anything that ends in a B or pretty much any upper-level course (although there are some sections of certain courses [like business law] for non-majors)

but most of the time there will be sections for non-majors (ex: BMGT230B is business stat, there is also a 230 for non-majors)

Hi lindz, I've checked out all the links to the Smith School in this thread but am still finding it tough to pinpoint the most current stats of those accepted into Smith as frosh. Can anyone please help me find the bottom line?

3.9 GPA and a 1360. I assume 3.9 is W but it never said and I know it is a 1360. I don't know exactly where i saw this but I am 99.5% sure I am right.

worrywart, i remember those being hard to find also. cheapseats is probably pretty close...i'd add another 650-700 onto that 1360 to adjust for the new SAT.
