what are the pros and cons of each? how are they different and similar?

Regarding…?

Smith - Amherst, UMass, Hampshire, Holyoke

Wellesley - Harvard, MIT

Wellesley enjoys both far more prestige and a considerably stronger consortium to compensate for whatever it lacks academically and socially.

Smith has the only engineering program among the Seven Sisters. The program is highly respected as well.

There have been tons of threads regarding this in the Smith and Wellesley boards, you can search to find them all.

Be very comfortable with the alternative life style at both schools.

^ but moreso at Smith. In regard to feminist and lesbian issues, Wellesley does not compare to Smith, nor does any other 100% female college.

Wellesley enjoys both far more prestige and name recognition. I don’t really put these schools in the same category. Wellesley is a notch above.

I visited and applied to both (waiting to hear back!). Location-wise, Wellesley’s near but outside of Boston. You have the resources of a nearby large city. There didn’t seem to be much in the town of Wellesley, and it seemed to be a little isolated. That was the only thing I didn’t really like about Wellesley; getting to Boston was more inconvenient than admissions would like you to believe.

Smith is in Northampton, which seems like a really cool town. I didn’t get much of a chance to explore, but I’d love to go back and check it out. Smith does have access to Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Amherst, and UMass, though it’s the most removed from the other schools. There’s a bus that runs between the five colleges. I’m sure that it’s not much further from the other schools as Wellesley is from the schools in its consortium, though.

Both schools are awesome and had beautiful campuses. Smith has an amazing housing system, although both schools have pretty good dorms. Wellesley does have more prestige, though both schools have excellent academics. It really depends on what you’re looking for in a school.
