Smith Open Campus

I have heard about Smith having an Open Campus for newly admitted students, but there is very limited information about it. Does anyone have any info on who the event is intended for specifically (early decision applicants or regular applicants who haven't made up their minds up yet...)? Also, what happens during this event? I know it's overnight...
Thanks for the help:)

This event is for regular decision admits whether they have decided to attend or not. It includes a day of activities for the students as well as their parents followed by an overnight stay with a current student.
Early decision students generally do not attend. Some particularly desirable admits have their expenses to the event paid for by the college. This is held in April after decisions have been released. Some students stay for the weekend as part of an program to increase diversity on the campus.

As far as the actual activities are concerned, they include campus tours, class visitation, panel discussions, attendance at sports practices, and of course the overnight stay in one of the houses with a current student. The object is in part to convince undecided students to commit but many attend even having made the choice to become Smithies.

I think Early Decision students are able to attend Open Campus (I would check with the Admissions Office in the Spring, but I remember that being the case in previous years), but it is aimed at Regular Decision students, to basically give them a flavor of the campus before they make up their mind whether or not to attend. There are, as others have said, tours, panels, a big student organization fair, and many other activities, in addition to an overnight. I would caution however, that while the regular overnight hosts are Gold Key guides, for Open Campus they need so many hosts they take just about everyone who volunteers, so quality of hosts can sometimes be mixed.

If you live in the area or you don’t mind spending the money to come to campus, it’s a fun way to experience a taste of Smith (especially if you haven’t yet had a chance to visit). But if you’re already committed to going and you’ve been to visit before, you shouldn’t feel obligated to attend. You’ll be on campus for real just a few months later!

just a note, at least for my year (2010) and last year (2011) ED students were NOT invited to Open Campus. They could theoretically come for the day, but couldn’t do an overnight.

Oh really?! I applied ED, but this day(s) sounds like a lot of fun. So you think it’s just not available to (nor intended for) students like me who have already committed to Smith?

**Thanks for all the info, everyone!

I’m nearly sure it’s not for EDers. I had friends who were ED and they were not invited by Smith.

It’s supposed to be a day to “woo” potential students. EDers are committed, so no need to woo
