I am currently a management major at the robert h. smith school of business. I dont know if I should do only management or double major with something like IS, accounting or finance. So far ive seen the top students at my school being double majors so I want to also be competitive. I dont really like accounting because of handling all the paperwork and financial statements. I dont think I will like finance for the same reason. I think IS or marketing would be good second majors for me. I like using technology to solve business problems. Would taking IS and management together be bad since IS has a management part in it as MIS? I dont really know what to do right now. Anyone have advice?

Don’t feel the need to combine your two majors perfectly - I know there have been plenty of business majors that couple it with some other completely random one. I received my degree in Accounting and now I’m getting a second degree in Biology… if you’re interested in IS or marketing at ALL, I suggest you take the classes and have it on your transcript, rather than worrying about whether it goes well with management. There will always be overlap!

Definitely double with something you like, management as a major is a bit of a soft skill. Paired together with marketing or IS, it becomes a useable skill.

UMDterp0914,

Thanks for the reply. Right now I am confused as to what my major should be. I have kept management as my primary major but dont know if it is that useful as ThisMortalSoil pointed out. I wish to have one or two majors that can help highlight my skills and be useful in the job market. Right now I am going to take a marketing, IS, and finance class in the fall semester to see which field I like. Hopefully then I will be able to figure out what I want to do. I would like to work at a tech company like Google in a product manager type position but Im not sure what major will lead to that.

Also, does anyone know how to change your major or add another major in the Smith School

ThisMortalSoil,

I think you are right and hopefully after fall semester I can decide which major will be best for me. I am planning to take classes in marketing and IS so that I can decide which one I want as a major. Also, if I double major will I be able to finish both requirements in 2 years. I just finished my sophomore year. I also applied to the global fellows program, how is that like and what are the benefits. Please tell me if you know.

So if you’re interested in the tech company industry to do product services, Marketing definitely helps. It’s a great idea to take the CORE business classes first to see what you’d like. I thought I’d definitely be a double Accounting & Finance, and took Finance and realized it wasn’t for me. Though that’s a moot point, as now I’m completely NOT in the business field, but the theory is still the same. Good luck!

As for changing majors - I did that with talking to my advisor in the undergraduate office in Van Munching Hall.

I have changed my major to finance and information systems double major. I am hoping this will interest me and wish to get an internship with Merrill Lynch to see if I like the field.

How did you change your major?

Schedule an appointment with your advisor, go to their office at the Undergrad Office in Van Munching, tell them which major you want, voila.

You could also use the change of major form online on the smith school website and ur advisor will contact u when ur major has been changed.

Businessdude you were right to change your major. I got a management and marketing degree from Smith years ago and it did not open many doors. Unless you are good at sales, marketing is not the way to go. I wanted to do market research and it is hard to find those jobs in this area. Information systems maybe a good choice in the long rong. I would have advised you to do accounting and information systems as double majors.
