Obviously, Brown is Ivy League, which sets it apart, but besides this distinction is Brown University really much better than Smith? They are my top two choices, and I'm trying to decide which to apply to early decision. What sets each apart from the other? I plan to major in chemistry with a possible double major or minor in theatre. Thank you in advance!

Also, I hope to be taking some dance classes and do theatre performances in college, so which school would be best for that?

Smith offers a fully Ivy-peer education. Don’t let the Ivy/not-Ivy issue make your decision for you.

For details on dance classes and theatre, you might want to visit each institution’s own sub-forum and ask there. Go to the main page where all of the forums are listed, and scroll down to find them.

Thank you. Are there any other reasons why one might choose Brown over Smith?

When you ask about the differences between two well-known colleges, you risk inviting the partisans tell you their favorites. What really matters here is YOU and what you want out of a college. You need to go spend the time on the campuses and in the dorms and cafeterias. Go to a theater class. Talk to the head of chemistry. Expose yourself to these two great schools and see which one feels better. If you’ve already done all this, then do it again. Ask the u/gs there the questions you want us to answer. Great choices to have, OP.

Thank you very much, your advice is extremely helpful You’re right, and I will do what you said. Thank you.

Have you visited? I think it’s imperative to stay overnight at a small LAC, especially a women’s college, before making the commitment. The community is great for the right person, but you really need to be sure.

Hanna’s point about women’s colleges is spot on. As a group they are different from co-ed institutions, and each of them is different from the other. They remain popular because they provide an education that other schools cannot, but that also means that the applicant has to be certain of the fit at the particular school.
