how is the air quality in claremont? is it bad like los angeles, or is the town far enough away that it isn't affected? if the air is pretty bad, how easy is it to get away from it by going into the mountains? as an outdoorsy, asthmatic runner, this will be a major issue in deciding where i go. thanks in advance for your response.

It's been discussed in some other threads too, but the general consensus seems to be that it's rarely bad in the Claremont area, and the months where it is most likely to be bad (July and August I think?), students aren't on campus. If you run a search in the Pomona forum for "smog", you should find some more opinions.

i think the smog can be pretty bad and one of the most unattractive parts of pomona. it's not something that you really see/feel when walking around on the pomona campus, but it's definitely visible when you look at the mountains. sometimes it's so bad i can barely even see the mountains. that being said, there's plenty of long distance runners (although i don't know if they're aasthmatic) and outdoorsy people here, so i guess it just depends on how much you care about the smog.

Are you in cross country? If you compete in the fall, I would say you might feel it and you could find it a problem, The warm months of September and part of October can be smoggy and bother some people. If you're asthmatic, you're probably one of them.
The winter is lovely, though - usually clear and mild. Spring is nice, too. If you run recreationally, and can time your runs to very early in the morning or work out in the gym in the smoggy months, you'd probably be OK.

The smog in the pomona area is not like Los Angeles, it is worse, IMO. It is worse in that it is noticeable in the Pomona area and not so much so in Los Angeles itself. I don't think smog is an LA issue as it was many years ago. And, with that said, the only time I think you would find it an issue is late May through August and most likely you won't be at school during that time period (as noted above) and it probably shouldn't affect you.

Might want to contact the track or x-country coach and see what they have to say.
