Smog?

When I visited pomona in january, it was absolutely gorgeous. however, one of my classmates who has asthma had a lot of trouble breathing because of the smog apparently. Also some relatives in CA told me that claremont has really bad smog. Is it noticeable during the school year? Does the smog affect students at all?

The smog is apparent in the summertime. If you are there from September through May (the school year) it won't be a problem.
If you are a runner or other endurance athete, or if you have asthma, you might have a problem with it during September and October, but I think the heat during those two months is more of an issue for students and residents.

Smog in Los Angeles in general is much improved from say, 10 years ago.

The general consensus is that the city's smoggy reputation is outdated, and significantly worse than current reality, but the air quality still bothers some. If you're very sensitive to the air quality in any city or hot climate, make a visit and be conscious of the issue. If air quality has never been a real issue for you, it probably won't be in Claremont, either. And in any case, one upside that's pointed out in an above thread is that smog sunsets are very beautiful ;)

I recently graduated from a Claremont school. Have had very mild exercise-induced asthma in the past, spend a fair bit of time outdoors, walk obscenely quickly but don't play any outdoor sports, wear contacts, never had an issue.

haha...

it'd be hilarious if the air quality in claremont was somehow worse than where i live (nyc). talk about trapped...

There isn't any smog in January, so it was probably the flowering plants that bothered your friends. Obviously, your CA friends don't live in Claremont, either. LOL September and October you may notice some smog, but mostly you will just be burning up because of the heat in those months. It is clear and beautiful most of the year.
