We live in SE MI and can smell the residual smoke from the fire in northern MI.

AQI 434 here in the Harrisburg, PA suburbs this morning. Glad I still have dozens of KF94 masks leftover from Covid.

The only person that is hurt by not wearing a mask is that person. So . . . . I don’t really care. If people are determined to be stupid there’s not much I can do about it.

All I know is when I fed my horses without a mask, my throat burned. With a mask no burning throat, no smoky smell. And our air quality this morning is “only” 180!

What bothered me is that it was mentioned they had them for children too, and the responses were they were not putting masks on their children.

Although I understand that the media is concentrating on the major east coast cities affected by the fires, this thread has highlighted that the bad air quality is not just in NYC, DC and Philly.

Air index is now 171, but sadly, expected to get much worse later on. This is the pits.

Currently in my area. Rural MD.

Of course, a few days of poor air quality is temporary. And also not healthy for some for even those few days. Hopefully we are also keeping in mind our (temporary) inconvenience compared to those whose lives will be more permanently or long lasting affected by the fires.

Ugh. Unfortunately, those of us on West Coast can relate. Worst I’ve experienced is 290–and that was brutal. We went out minimally. Could not wear contacts. Throat scratchy. Felt I couldn’t take a full breath with my sensitive lungs. We had air purifier running non stop. It took me a week before my lungs and throat felt back to normal.

After the smoke clears out, remember to change your filters in your house. First go round, we did not…and when we turned furnace on—yuck!

Those N 95’s do help if you must go out. That’s the reason we keep some in our Disaster supplies. Stay safe everyone!!!

I just checked nextdoor, the conspiracy theories are popping up, our government just wants to control us, it’s obviously something besides wildfires, yesterday was just a beautiful summer day.

Thanks for this! While we aren’t near what others are (80s-100s), this is the week I usually change my air filter. Mine is giant and only gets changed once/year. I think I’ll wait until next week. Thanks for a reason to procrastinate!

Just saw this on my AOL news feed:

States that have air quality alerts right now

Health officials in 16 states and Washington, D.C., issued or extended air quality alerts Thursday, warning that fine particulate matter from the wildfire smoke could exceed unhealthy levels and make breathing difficult, especially for people in sensitive groups, such as children, those over the age of 65 or those with underlying respiratory conditions.

• Pennsylvania
• Michigan
• New York
• Ohio
• Vermont
• Massachusetts
• Connecticut
• Rhode Island
• New Jersey
• Delaware
• Indiana
• Maryland
• Washington, D.C.
• Kentucky
• Virginia
• North Carolina
• South Carolina

And this picture. Flights in and out of New York are being delayed due to visibility.

Good way to check. Updated every hour.

Brooklyn now 183, particulate matter 2.5.

Down to 166–unhealthy today. We were in the high 300s yesterday.

What I hope is that we ALL see that this is a part of a bigger process that we need to be seeing front and center every day. I am terrified of the world my grands will grow up in, especially if we give up and don’t take it seriously, or don’t feel we can slow it, or, worse, don’t believe it’s actually happening.

Down to 145 here (from 195). I can see the sky! And not smell smoke. Spent the afternoon outside comfortably. Hurrah!
