This is going to sound silly, but I would really recommend yoga for the different issues you described. Depending on the type of yoga you are doing, I personally think pilates is better exercise and that is what I prefer to do. Either are great for focus, calming the mind, and giving you a jump in the morning. Especially if you do the accompanying breathing properly. And pilates gives you an awesome core.

If nothing else, have you thought about the electronic cigarettes? I don’t know much about it but my friend used one for a while, supposedly it’s beneficial because you get the dose of nicotine without the tar. Still bad for you but possible a little bit less bad? I don’t know.

My childhood best friend, her mother, and her younger brother watched her father die an extremely gruesome, extremely bloody death right in their living room as a result of lung cancer. I decided I never wanted to risk putting any future children I may have through that if there is anything I can do to prevent it, and so I do not smoke and do not date smokers. That is all I’ll say, I know that’s not what you asked. Good luck.

ETA: On the subject of ADHD, I assume you must be aware that if you were diagnosed and prescribed stimulants it would be almost the same thing as what you are doing now only with fewer carcinogens? ADHD is treated with stimulants. You are self-medicating with a carcinogenic stimulant. If this is a problem you’ve always had, even before you started smoking, it may very well be worth talking to a doctor about it. Unless you’ve researched the symptoms and really don’t feel you could have it.

i should really stop smoking. some of my family has had problems too. my dad had heart problems due to smoking that ultimately led to his death, and my maternal grandma had problems that contributed to her death. my maternal aunt and uncle both smoke and are in their 50s, but havent had any problems. i just really enjoy smoking, but i havent really tried to stop. i was able to cut back by half for a couple months and then i lost the motivation. someday i think i could quit with the proper motivation (like having a kid) as long as i continue to try and gradually cut back.
tiff90, how old were u when you started? if you’ve been smoking 7+ yrs u must have been pretty young when u started. im just wondering cuz it seems like a lot of smokers start before they’re 18, including me

On the topic of motivation, a husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, or significant other might help motivate you (or just close friends too). Also support groups might help (not really sure if they have a Smokers Anonymous but they might)

For ADHD- one side effect of Adderall is that it does curb your appetite. That might help you get in shape (if you’re eating too much). So far, in a month its helped me lose 7 of the 20 pounds I put on during freshman year. But exercising is still necessary!

On the topic of ADD/ADHD, I already have a health problem that explains my sporadic attention span. It would be hard to get a secondary diagnoses. I have two friends (twins) who do have ADD, they tried meds when they are younger, but they are able to deal with it now without anything. Another one of my friends stopped taking Ritalin Soph year of college, and I don’t think my lack of concentration is any worse than theirs. I’m seeing my dr. in a few months. I mean the lack of concentration and bad memory have always been present, but it’s been more noticeable at school. I want to see if it subsides in the next few months, but it’s been bothering me for awhile.

Ehh, the majority of my friends from home smoke, a handful do at school. My friends who don’t smoke don’t agree with it, but they don’t harass me about it.
