Smoking and College Life

How many of you smoke cigarettes in college? Is it allowed in your college? How long have you been smoking?

Save your money and your lungs.

I don’t smoke dude! Just wondering what about the smokers. Cause there are hella number of smokers in america

https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/adult_data/cig_smoking/index.htm says that about 15.1% of adults in the US were smokers in 2015, down from 20.9% in 2005. For the 18-24 age group, it was 13.0%.

If secondhand smoke bothers you, you can look up various colleges’ smoking rules. Some disallow smoking in all or most of their campus outside areas (as well as inside their buildings). But do not be surprised if you see collections of smokers just outside the boundaries of no-smoking areas.

At my university students were not allowed to smoke inside any campus buildings. They had to smoke outside (even in the winter which got quite cold). I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you.

I do not. I’ve seen some vapers at my college though. Smoking is suppose to be completely off limits at my college, even outside. I mean I guess you could sneak one in the parking lot since it’s away from the buildings? I still see people smoking though. Not very common but it still happens, usually they smoke right next to the “No Smoking” sign.

Think long range, too. Smoking is banned many places.

A co-worker told me about his realization one day. He said there he was, educated, nice suit, well respected, 20+ years in the industry, standing in the stinky building dumpster area with the other smokers as the rain blew in. No upper managers were standing next to the trash. He called it a career limiting habit. He had smoked since he was 14 and that day, decided cigarettes would no longer distract him with craving and cause him to stink.

Don’t start, you wont have to quit.

Only 15% of the general population still smokes tobacco. My two college students say weed is big on college campuses now, even maybe larger use than alcohol.

Some guy offered me a joint which I declined.

The number of smokers in the USA now is nothing compared to the past and nothing compared to Europe today. The latter at least certainly when it comes to smoking in public - not that familiar with the actual prevalence of smokers in Europe vs USA, but the smoking in public is astronomical in comparison over there.

I don’t smoke. I might see someone smoking once a day, sometimes every other day. I don’t think a college can “disallow,” smoking as it’s 100% legal, as long as you’re outside and a little ways from buildings.

I see vaping all the time, though.

I would have high confidence that if you look up stats on smoking today, there is a negative correlation between income and education level. So I would expect little to no smoking for most people on college campuses in the US. At my school, I would place it at less than 5% easily, and most who do smoke are international students.

As others said, vaping is more common especially as marijuana is legalized around the US.

However, groups of smokers may be more visible due to being concentrated just outside the no-smoking zones around building doors, etc…

Smoking rates for adults by educational attainment:

GED: 34.1%
High school diploma: 19.8%
Some college but no degree: 18.5%
Associate’s degree: 16.6%
Bachelor’s degree: 7.4%
Graduate degree: 3.6%

You may notice that the designated smoking areas at your school are disproportionately used by school staff (e.g. security, custodians, dining hall workers), while students and faculty are conspicuously underrepresented.

I live in Asia where there is still lots of smoking, mostly men. The other day I was out running on city sidewalks and I wished there was a law banning open car windows for smokers. Why should I have to breath their nasty second hand smoke? Gross.
