Smoking on campus

What seems to be the pulse on campus for students smoking? I read the policy on FSU's website but am curious about the student habits.

We visited many colleges over the past 18 months and some stood out above others with students seen smoking, either congregating outside buildings or in passing.

Smoking is generally prohibited in all public buildings in Florida and I’d guess far fewer students smoke than years ago. Still, they’re college kids and I’m sure some still spend their $$ on tobacco. For me, I seem to notice more people smoke in northern states for some reason  than Florida, which appears more similar to California.

It’s very cool, you know…

OK I am going to go out on a limb here, but I think that there is a little smoking going on, but not so much of the cigarette type… Typical college campus.

Back to the cigarettes, I don’t really recall seeing that many smokers the times I have been on campus. And in Florida, you CANNOT smoke in any stadium, so games are nice. No cigarette smokers and NO CIGAR SMOKERS. There are these designated areas behind the stadium you can go to to smoke, and its seems like mostly the grownups who go there to light up.

Hopefully the increase in cigarette taxes will discourage smoking even more.

Yes, federal tax going up by $.62 cents per pack (some cartons now selling for $40+ in anticipation of this) and the State of FL is contemplating another $1 per pack increase in state tax. The newspaper today mentioned more bootleg cigarettes, and folks near the border driving to another state. I did not know that you can buy cigarettes on Indian reservations and not pay state or federal taxes.

um…cigarettes arent THAT common on campus, but you do see your fair share of smokers. i am in the belief that more people smoke other things if you get my jist. im not saying my opinion on it, im just saying its more common than tobacco.

judging from your username, im assuming your a parent, dont get worried, if your child doesnt do it now, he will not be pressured tremendously to do it in college. those commercials are not true, those who smoke pot keep it to themselves, they dont try to invite others to their activities.

thanks kauffman. Actually, I’m not worried about pot, etc. I totally understand what happens in college. No biggie.

But it is HIS concern about the cigarette smoking. He has his college choice narrowed down to a couple of schools and some of them we noticed major smoking going on during our visits. I’ve tried explaining that he will be up against this everywhere & especially at college. (I happen to be an ex-smoker who is not particularly bothered by smokers.)

There are not that many smokers. There are fewer now than when I was a student at FSU in the 1970s.
