Smoking

Could someone please tell me the smoking laws in Chicago? I've heard that in some American states smoking is banned in all public indoor places. What is the situation in Chicago?
Also, what are the rules regarding smoking on campus, in the houses, etc. ?

I believe smoking is now banned by state or city ordinance in dorms as well.

Smoking is banned in all public buildings (including dorms) and within 15 feet of entrances in the city of Chicago.

Except freestanding bars/taverns, you can still go to places like the Abbey Pub or most of the jazz clubs and light up. I think they have until 2008 until nobody can smoke ever. Aggravating as all hell, because part of the atmosphere (heh) of a good jazz club is the thick cloud of smoke wafting lazily through the air.

Gotta love that "atmosphere". Not. I'm asthmatic, and if I'm somewhere with that sort of atmosphere, I don't breathe properly for a week. It makes it rather hard for me to go out and see concerts, as many nightclubs/venues are smoky.

On a more general note, does anyone know how prevalent smoking is in the Chicago student body?

There are a good number of students who smoke, more than I expected. There are students who begin smoking while at Chicago. There are some students who would like to stop and other students who love smoking. The popular smoking spot on the quads is right outside of Cobb, and you'll also see some smokers outside of the dorms. The majority of students do not smoke.

See, LESS students smoke here than I personally expected, because I'm used to schools like Columbia and NYU where everybody and their mom smokes. Then I experienced the winter here, and you realize that it's just a matter of not wanting to have to go out into the friggin arctic blast everytime you want to light up.

Maybe it depends on what part of the country you're from. My state banned smoking in public buildings when I was little, so it's not a very friendly state for smokers to begin with. None of my friends smoked, either, so I wasn't around it very much in high school.
