Hi bagirl24!
I’m currently a Sophomore studying Biology at SMU and I’ve absolutely loved it so far. I’ve had numerous research opportunities with professors, since my second semester of my Freshman year, so I never had to wait until I was an Upperclassmen to begin researching (huge plus for med school!)
Also, since I have a range of interests, SMU’s curriculum allows me to study other thing, as well. Along with Biology, I’m also majoring in Political Science and Spanish, and I’ll still finish in 4 years!
Another thing I learned just this summer is that there are so many hospitals just within a 5 mile radius of SMU, from Parkland to Presbyterian, and even UTSW Medical School, which is great for internships and volunteering opportunities.
So overall, I’ve loved every minute of it and I think choosing SMU for my Pre-Med route has been the best decision, ever!

SMU4lyfe, thank you so much for your response, that is reassuring. Got my acceptance today (Florida) so have a lot of decisions to make. It made me nervous that SMU did not have a med school attached, have been concerned about the quality of professors in the math and sciences. One of the reasons I was so attached to SMU was the ability to take classes outside my major. I want to be a Dr., however; I love engineering and would like some business knowledge, as well before graduating. Most schools will not let you take classes outside your major. Thank you !!!

Don’t be nervous about SMU not having a med schools attached! There are plenty of opportunities for pre-med students at SMU and our science/math professors are top-knotch!

I have several friends at SMU who are on the pre-med track but are majoring in business or engineering. The great thing about SMU is that you have the ability to pair any major with a pre-med track and you’re assigned a pre-med advisor specifically to ensure that yuo are still prepared for medical school (prerequistes, MCAT, applications, et cetera) without having to necessarily major in only sciences.

FWIW, no one at any school has to “major” in pre-med. There are specific pre-requisites (one year physics, gen-chem, organic chem, etc.) that must be completed prior to applying to medical school, but the individual’s major is his or her decision.

this is all great information, thank you so much! It is going to be a hard decision, I have gotten a few great scholarship offers, but SMU is still “tops” in all that I have received so far. I really loved the school when I visited.

Zebbadimday, I was referencing universities that offer Pre-Med majors with specific emphasis in math/science as part of the major requirement (ie. outside of the requirements for med school applicants.)

Bagirl24, I am so glad you enjoyed your visit to SMU! And I’m glad you found this information helpful. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact your admissions counselor or ask to speak to a student ambassador!
