SMU Class of 2015 Decision Thread

Hi all!

I usually do not post on forums, but all the information posted on this website has been very helpful in my college search, and I felt I should give back what information I have.

I contacted my admission counselor at the end of last week, and she informed me that decision letters (I assume there may be more than one round for regular decision, so it may just be the first round) were going to be mailed on Saturday, February 19th. As you may have noticed, that was a few days ago! Seeing as today was a holiday and the entire mail system went on pause, the letters should be arriving in the next few days!

I was told that the letters were supposed to be mailed a week or two ago, but the winter storms slowed them down considerably and they had to push the date back.

Has anyone else received similar information from their counselors? Good luck everyone!

We were at SMU yesterday for Mustang Monday. During the presentation the Admission Counselors informed us that we should all hear back by mid-March. During lunch one of the teachers informed us that a bunch of letters were actually being mailed on Monday. So two different answers… John Angle would you happen to know if a first wave of letters did indeed go out yesterday??? (now that I know that you truly exist and attend SMU and visit this site…great dorm tour btw : ) )

All decision letters should go out by mid-March, but an initial batch was mailed on Monday, primarily to remaining early action applicants.

I was deferred in early action, but received my acceptance today. So I must have been part of the group of letters sent Monday. Also received academic scholarship of $7,500 each year for four years.

Yay! I just got my letter today, it was dated February 18th  I was admitted with a $12,000 per year scholarship! so excited… Don’t know if I’ll end up attending but I am extremely excited. Does anyone know what the best dorms are for freshman?

My D just got her letter today, also dated Feb 18th. She applied RD, not EA, had submitted her application around December 22nd. She received a $12,000 per year Trustee scholarship and is very excited.

PS it was pretty funny, Wednesday she got an email saying “We are inviting accepted students to Destination SMU…” (I guess the postal mail delay a previous poster relayed didn’t get relayed to those emailing about Destination SMU!) So starting Wed. she was HOPING that meant she was really admitted… She was glad to get the package today!

@thewong1 - It was nice meeting you at Mustang Monday (I assume you’re the person I talked to about CC at the Meadows steps)!

Things are done in waves: Early, make a decision on EA deferred, the first group of RD people who complete their files, and so on and so forth. Letters are mailed out in waves along with the decisions. I’m not entirely sure when we did the last mailing of acceptances (it seems like we’re always mailing something haha!), but I think that it may have been late last week.

I still haven’t received my letter. I live in California. I was deferred and
wondering why I have received nothing. Has anyone in SOuthern California received anything that was deferred?

^^ I’m in the same boat. Was waitlisted and now waiting on my letter. They said deferred applicants would be notified during February…so I’m thinking any day now it should come.
What are you stats btw?

My test scores could be better–not in the high end but would rather not comment. My GPA is better ( 3.83 unweighted for academics in 9-12) 3.93 for non weighted grades 10-12 4.0 for 10-12 . Leadership for 2 years( officer) and also 4 years of community service.
ACT is not below average but i do wish it was higher. I had an interview, visited campus,
went to every presentation at school. I was also told that I would hear in Feb. WHen we called them, they said deferred applicants would hear by this week for sure ( also mentioned last week as a possibility) They said deferred applicants would go out first and yet one of the other bloggers said they applied regular decision. However, they were awarded a big scholarship so understandable. Makes me wonder though is mine is a rejection as the one blogger made it sound like acceptance letters were all out for the deferrals. Their mail does seem slow though. Nothing today ( the 3rd either)
Southern California . Have you received anything from Rick DIaz by email recently?

Sorry , I meant it is March 3rd and I received nothing today

I just spoke to Rick and he said the storm pushed the office back since they were closed for a week, and that they are working really hard to get things out. Sounds like they haven’t sent out the letters for us yet.
My only weak point is my 25 ACT…but for some reason I’m really worried because everything else is beyond stellar. Sure my GPA is a 3.65, but my special circumstances were presented and they know that my sophomore year was my anchor for certain reasons.

Greens,

Thanks for the info on Rick. Good to know about the office being closed. Your ACT is like mine. That is my weakness although I don’t have loads of AP classes either.
I am worried as I heard they had over 12,000 apply. So you talked to Rick on the phone?

Greens,

My mid semester grades weren’t available until 2nd week of Feb. What about you? That could also be the reason ours weren’t mailed yet . I am still worried though

There are so many students that have not decided which school they want to attend yet. They have until May 1st to say Yes or No. However, more and more students have applied to more than one school so they will have to say “No” to more schools. I would think the students will let the schools know after they attend admittance day and after they receive their financial/shcolarship package. If you don’t hear for awhile, I would think it is because SMU is just waiting for spots to open up. Also, if you don’t get in, you could always try transferring in. I’ve heard it is easier to transfer in than entering through normal enrollment. Be patient! Just as a FYI - my son hasn’t sent in his “no’s” in yet but he will very soon. He has already told SMU “Yes”.

New Jersey, thanks, was your son admitted thru early action?

Same man. Except, I’ve taken 8 AP classes, 4 last year (4.2 junior year). My mid years weren’t available until the second week also. But no one from my school has heard yet so we’re not alone.
Yeah, I talked to him on the phone. He said they received 13,000 applicants this year, as opposed to their 8,000 from last year. So I can see how they are taking longer than usual since the storm pushed everything back a week and they are overwhelmed with applicants for the first time.
To say the least, I am VERY worried about not getting accepted for some reason…it’s my number one school and I will commit right away upon acceptance.

Greens,
Your Jr. Year stats sound great. I don’t think you should worry too much but with so many applicants, I understand. I am really worried now. My stats are as good. I hate that you have to take so many AP’s nowadays. I don’t want to burn out before college! SMU shouldn’t be surprised that they have so many applicants. They recruit heavily . In fact, I feel I have been given false hope based on the way they have recruited me.

Greens-
I have never even received a reply to an email from him but I have actually never called him before. Do you call him much?

Thanks for the confident boost…but for some reason I’m iffy about the whole thing.
This is the first time I called him, Ive never emailed him other then sending him my supplement. And now I just remembered that I should’ve asked why I was deferred!
