SMU Class of 2017 EA/RD Discussion Thread

imthinking mind posting your stats I am getting nervous

Woo I got in a couple of days ago  I got a $20,000 scholarship, which is nice, but it’s still a little pricey for me! I’ll have to keep my options open

Don’t be! My stats leave a lot to be desired! Not exactly sure how to post them, so I’ll try

I knew going into admissions my stats were on the lower side, and was honestly counting on my promise as a music major and my improvement in senior year. I had anticipated improving my SAT score, but I actually did worse on my second SAT. Oh well.

GPA: 3.43 UW (My GPA is weird because I transferred schools, causing a change in GPA, and I had a really bad junior year where my GPA dropped a lot.)

5 AP Classes

SAT: 1850
M+CR: 1140

OOS
Minority

Hi Im thinking-
thanks for your message! (I would reply privately but this site wont let me cause I have not posted enough, so they tell me.).
anyway, thanks for letting me know you got ur letter yesterday! I will let you know - we should def get it today! we are in seattle…
you should feel good about deferral - you should get in at some point!!!
where does brownzebra live and why are these envelopes taking so long???

didnt get in oh well cant do much about it

where do you live brownzebra? sorry you didn’t get in… transferring is a great option but you will have to work your butt off freshman year…

Los Angeles. It is not a big deal, I emailed a couple of the counselors of the other schools I am applying to and both said I was accepted one of which was my first choice. I am not to worried about SMU though it was a reach I am on the lower end of the spectrum, 3.2 and 1700 sat.

Thanks brownzebra! We’re on the same coast so this helps me to know. I am certain our notification must be waiting in the mail when we get home today.
Good luck with the university of your choice! Yay! :)

Accepted! With 20k a year scholarship  so happy!
4.6 GPA/3.95 uw

Deferred…!

I’m in Orange County, California. Just got my big red envelope today.

3.4 uw/3.5 w gpa
32 ACT
915 volunteer hours
6 APs
President/founder of the forensics club at my school

So excited!!!

Deferred and sorry about this for my daughter. Thanks to ImThinking and to everyone who responded to this conversation… it kept me going to the end!!
Good luck to everyone with their choices for college and live the dream!!

Last year my son was deferred in December. Was very discouraged. Had applied EA to 4 schools, and deferred by all. His academic profile fit several of those described in this thread - meaning he was a good candidate, hopeful, but not a sure thing. Several good things came out of the deferral: He hustled and applied to more schools. While SMU remained his top choice always, the additional regular applications helped him focus on the potential new reality of attending another school, and importantly the need to become comfortable with that. The extra apps also kept him busy. In retrospect the biggest benefit of the deferral was that he focused very hard the next semester and though doing well enough, improved his grades further while others in his class, who had been early accepted in Nov-Dec, caught early spring fever and watched their grades take a hit. Then in February came the good news, he was in at SMU, and is now a fully engaged freshman, class of 2016.

Have hope, deferral from EA does not mean the end. Best wishes to all. Hope to see you at SMU. It is a phenomenal school in every way, and if it doesn’t work then you will surely end up in another good place, after all if you’re talented enough to apply to SMU you must be a pretty good catch.

Dear TyCobb,
What a lovely note. Thank you for sharing your story - it’s so hopeful and positive! I am going to take to heart what you say about silver linings. I love the image of a young person rolling up their sleeves, doubling up on the efforts and coming out a winner. A great lesson all around!!! I will share this with my daughter… it’s a life lesson to learn from and I have only the highest admiration for such a dedicated young person!!!

great insight Tycobb, I bet your son was better prepared for college than some of those that let the ball drop their last semester of their senior year!!

I got my acceptance recently but my package did not include any scholarship. I was very shocked and disappointed because my family cannot afford for me to go without any scholarship!

I also wrote a really great essay. The first six weeks of english class this year we wrote our college essays and my teacher loved mine. I also emailed my essay to Mickey Saloma in the engineering department because he said it would be a good idea for him to review it before I applied and he said it was great!

Overall, I am very shocked that they did not offer me any scholarship. Is it possible they could have forgotten to put it in the envelope? Does anyone know if it is possible to check on that?

I would call your local state advisor from SMU. Anything in possible. It should come inside your packet in a “special” envelope. Mine came in a silver envelope.
