SMU Class of 2021 EA/ED Thread

@Rewingmom- Yes, it’s happened in the past. If your son has new scores coming in from SAT or ACT in Feb then that could boost his chances. regardless, I would reach out to you HS counselor and ask them to reach out to the SMU rep to see if a review is an option. Tell them that your Son is trying to decide and this could put him over the top. Something like that.

I just got invited to Hilltop. It’s different than UHP right?

What is hilltop? I’m not sure, I didn’t look into my honors invitation too much

What is hilltop scholars? I got an email also is there a groupme for them. Im in the big one but i was wondering if i could talk to a smaller group

Hey! I know this thread is for EA/ED to SMU, but I was wondering when SMU will send out acceptance if we did Regular Decision? I sent my application around December 24th. When will they send out acceptance emails/letters?
Thanks!

I think you’re supposed to find out in February? I’m not sure but I bet it’s on the website.

So am I still eligible for possibly getting an email for President’s Scholar interview? Or is President’s Scholar only for people who do EA/ED ?

@bigeddy123 , or anyone who can help, my son has been accepted to SMU but is not yet in the general groupme. Does he need an invitation to join? Thank you.

Does anyone know when the presidential scholars are going to be contacted? Have they been already? I know that they were announced around this time last year.

My DS just got email for Selection for interview for Presidential Scholarship. How many people get to interview and how many do they select.

My daughter applied RD and got an email today to interview for the Presidential Scholarship on March 24. I am wondering the same thing as @AllenTx15.

@AllenTX15 SMU website says about 60 finalists are selected for interviews, and 20-25 PS are awarded - so congrats to those who are invited!

If he is in the facebook group, there’s a link to the groupme. I can’t post links publicly but you can message me and I can give you the link if you’d like!

@Okla_mom1718 whoops it didn’t tag you but read my last post!

Any idea when I could expect to hear if I was deferred? Also does anyone have an idea if I will be admitted? 3.75 GPA, 30 ACT, lots of EC’s and leadership positions, many volunteer hours completed as well!

Got accepted to SMU and got 4 different scholarships offered from SMU. Some say that I was lucky, since most got offered 2. But the truth is my family still has to pay out of pocket a lot. Should I go for it? Or stick with my safety school. i will pay much less.

The answer is…it depends. What is it that you want to do? The economic cost of a college education is always an important matter to consider. But, it is not the only one. The issue you have to consider is would SMU provide you a better educational background and university environment over that of your “safety” school, and can you quantify that in real dollars, while understanding that such real dollars are a financial burden on your family at the same time they are trying to plan for retirement. Any university is what you make of it. I went to SMU. I made a lot of it. I earned a Fulbright Scholarship to the UK. I was admitted to law school at Georgetown. Could I have done that elsewhere? Likely not. The opportunities provided to me by the scholarships I had at SMU (Hunt, Class of '98) opened doors to things I would not have been able to do and experience elsewhere. So, do your scholarships give you the opportunity to do that? Is your planned field of study a strong point at SMU? Is SMU a good fit for you as a university? If so, then perhaps it is worth the additional cost. If not, then, perhaps the unnamed safety school is the better choice. In either event, carpe diem.

@Peruna1968, thank you for your thought and time analyzing my situation. I appreciate it very much.

Sorry for typo
