Smu ea/ed 2023

I got in EA tonight and received the Second Century Scholar award (20k). Here are stats:
OOS Female (NJ)
GPA: 4.1
ACT: 33
Very strong EC’s with leadership positions: (JSA, DECA, Debate, Rowing, etc.) and awards, plus 6 AP courses and strong essays.
Waiting to hear from other schools and weigh my options financially, but there’s a good shot I’ll be on the Hilltop in August! Congrats to everyone else who was accepted!!

@Frankie2011 The letter said something about the first semester of senior year is when students do their best work, etc No one can take the SAT at this point. The next one is in March so they have to be ok with what you already have. The only place to improve would be grades even if our kids are in the wheelhouse… I thought my D did some great work and it sounds like your’s did too, so I’m confused. Can I ask if you applied for financial aid?

Our son received Provost Scholar, thank goodness. Did they notify Presidential Scholars and/or Cox Business Scholars? If not, does anyone know the timing? Thanks!

Accepted with $25,000 a year as an SMU Distinguished Scholar

ACT: 33
GPA: 3.76
Strong EC’s and leadership positions, great essays, and great recs from teachers who really like me

my son was accepted tonight - SMU Distinguished Scholar …

@dday666666 my son also got in today with Distinguished Scholarship. I wonder what the criteria was for Provost (can’t seem to find info). But alas, we are still refreshing, refreshing, refreshing at UT Austin!

My son was deferred…also deferred at TCU. Somewhat shocked because he was accepted to Baylor with a 16K a year scholarship. I thought he would at least get in to TCU (maybe without money) and SMU for sure. We probably will withdraw for SMU because he really wasn’t that in to it. Just figured we would apply to all 3.

My daughter got in with Provost (30k). Does anyone know when President’s Scholars will send invites? Outside of that and Hunt, are there other merit based scholarships from departments? The price tag is so ridiculously steep that 30k off doesn’t make it appealing (and we won’t qualify for need based aid at that after-merit price point). She’s in at UT, which is much cheaper, even being full pay, and a few other TX schools (UTD, Trinity, Southwestern), all with their top scholarships. So I can’t see this staying on the table unless there are more scholarships available.

Son was accepted with Provost scholarship.

OOS/WM
33 ACT/ 1430 SAT (780M/650E)
4.0 GPA
Eagle Scout
Heavy load of AP/EC
Hendrix College Odyssey Book Award
Volunteer at retirement home
Baseball Sophomore year
Track So/Jr years
Worked 2 jobs at restaurant and an office last summer
Attended top private school in state 9th-12th grade

Good luck to everyone. For what it’s worth, for those who received scholarships, a few years ago my other son received the Provost scholarship and was later offered an additional $16K from Lyle. His scores were virtually identical to my younger son. Just food for thought if you are weighing options based on your offer, there’s a strong likelihood there is an additional offer forthcoming.

Does anyone know when they will attach a major to your account? It doesn’t show a major on the acceptance letter. Also if there are scholarships within each department, when will those be announced?

DD accepted as Distinguished scholar.
Already in at UT Austin and ASU (Barrett honors with scholarship). Waiting to hear back from more selective schools.

1500 SAT
3.9 GPA
Very rigorous course load at small private HS that doesn’t rank
Two sport varsity athlete
100+ hrs/yr volunteering
Various leadership roles

Hoping for invite to compete for Presidential scholarship. Will apply for Hunt (her sister is one - loves it). Can confirm that SMU offers additional scholarships that are stackable.

SMU is a special place that takes very good care of their scholars. Congrats to all!

@momoboys

SMU’s total cost is much higher than Baylor and TCU and academics or sports aren’t any better. I think Baylor with 16K means roughly 30K saving every year compared to SMU. Go with that.

@momoboys I got 18k a year at baylor and at TCU and got deferred from SMU.

Does anyone get rejected early or is everyone deferred?

@momoboys @ esakj9494 My son’s stats put him squarely in the middle of the average for students admitted in prior classes, but he was also deferred. He also got into Baylor with a 18k scholarship. He’s going to major in business and has been fortunate enough to have been admitted (so far) to several strong business schools, including Kelley, so it doesn’t make much financial sense at this point to go the deferral route at SMU.

@Watch37 I’m still trying to figure if the people with good stats, but were deferred applied for FA. I’m trying to figure out if my D should still pursue this school considering she had all the right stats and has other acceptances. I could be wrong, but I feel like if we didn’t apply for FA she would have gotten in. Of course I could be hugely wrong.

@citimama9 We did not apply for financial aid. DS did receive Distinguished Scholar award though ($25K/year).

my son did apply through FAFSA and did get accepted and also received the Distinguished Scholar scholarship … financial aid has nothing to do with the acceptance process …

Same here, DS applied with FAFSA and CSS Profile and was admitted, with scholarship.

Accepted!!

SAT: 1310
