SMU ED Class of 2025

So if Spring admit when do you hear about your scholarships and/or financial aid package?

My son got admitted for Fall 2021. He was deferred from Early Action. Waiting now to hear about admission to Cox Business School. The decision letter said that would come in the next week. There was no mention of any scholarship awards.

My D was accepted to Meadows back in November, and to larger university in December under EA. We are still awaiting financial aid. She was awarded no institutional (ie SMU) academic scholarship, which would have been notified at the time of acceptance. However, Iā€™ve been told that Meadows will separately award any artistic merit in ā€œmid-Marchā€ after all applications/portfolios have been considered. So weā€™re waiting on that, and then any need-based aid would come ā€œwithin a weekā€ of Meadows decisionsā€¦ A very long process/journey, but weā€™re hopeful SMU will allow her the opportunity to attend. Good luck

So far, D got 30K merit scholar from SMU. If another 40K need-scholar is awarded, it will create a very challenging choice for us. Of course, the 40K is a very small chance as my understanding.

Does SMU admit students to the Spring term normally? Or is this new this year?

There are other Smu blogs about Soring admit so not new this year. Search Smu Spring admit

USC Cornell and Middlebury are some that have spring admissions but each treat them a bit differently. It appears that SMUā€™s is most modeled after USCā€™s with study abroad options with your cohort in London and Switzerland. Middlebury doesnā€™t emphasize class options in its spring programs.

I believe fin aid packages come out within a couple weeks of RD admission. Ask the fin aid office. Yes, there are also specific college grants that may come along the way.

I have a friend whose Houston area son was admitted for spring and I suggested that they attend an upcoming admitted studentā€™s day (virtual or live?) to ask questions and see how they feel about the vibe.

A good thing is that a future student isnā€™t missing out on dorm or registration options by waiting.

Iā€™m not sure how a Spring admits can be guaranteed a study abroad opportunity, especially since other countries are announcing new lockdowns now. Also, it seems that financial aid would not be offered for these study abroad opportunities. SMU wants a completed Spring Interest Form completed by March 26th, yet it seems financial aid info wonā€™t be known until after this. We definitely canā€™t afford to pay full price for SMU, so we canā€™t make a decision until we see the financial aid package.

But you just have to complete the interest form. Commitment and deposits arenā€™t until May 1, like everywhere else.

Yes the entry form isnā€™t binding. Everyone definitely will need to know net price before sending in May 1 deposit.

Good to know. Thing is - we arenā€™t interested if we donā€™t get a decent financial aid package. I know itā€™s not binding, but we would hate taking someoneā€™s spot who might be on the waitlist. We ran the NPC but weā€™ve been pleasantly (and unpleasantly) surprised by other schoolsā€™ financial aid awards as compared to the NPC. I guess itā€™s best to just complete the Spring Interest Form for now.

Did anyone who got admitted into Spring 2022 get merit in their acceptance letter? I called the admissions office today but did not get a clear answer as to if that would have been included in acceptance letter or when FA comes out. I emailed my admissions counselor with questions regarding the entry form, waitlist, and financial aid-I will share any response I get because it seems people have similar questions.

I emailed them as well asking when financial aid/scholarship info follows the Spring admission. Will also share her response when I get it.

Iā€™m fairly certain most spring admit programs do NOT offer FA for that semester, so itā€™s a little bit of a money grab on part of the schools. My D was offered spring admit at Tulane, where her brother goes, but itā€™s a pretty tall order without any FA for usā€¦ They did give her a good aid package once she starts in January thoughā€¦

Weā€™re still waiting on FA from SMU and keep getting bombarded with messages to give feedback, visit, deposit, etc. Iā€™ve told them all to call once the FA package is complete.

I remember we all were waiting for financial aid package. If I am not wrong, your admission was under EA. We got our package this month and I am wondering how come you still didnā€™t get it. My daughter has committed to SMU, paid the deposit a few days ago. Just check with your admission counselor.

I emailed both admissions and FA reps at Meadows and was told it would be sent ā€œafter all RD applications / portfolios were receivedā€. That was January 15, right? Now mid March ??? Anyway, D got into Michigan so am fairly certain sheā€™ll be going there

They probably meant financial packages would go out after all RD/deferred admittants were notified. Everyone just got notified last night so aid packages are probably coming soon.

I do not know for sure how SMU handles Spring admits; but my 2nd daughter was a Spring admit at Pepperdine so I can give some advice based off her experience. She took the Spring admit because she felt it was a better fit for her then SMU. When she emailed admissions to accept she reiterated that she would love a Fall spot if one became open. We also attended EVERY event Pepperdine had to offer and made sure they knew she was there and a Spring admit wanting a Fall spot. 3 weeks before move in she got the call to move to Fall if she wanted to. Pepp has over 100 Spring admits every year so they moved through their list pretty well. We also know a few who chose not to take the Fall date and keep their Spring date and they acclimated very easily to the University. I think a plus about SMU is for those wanting to go Greek, they do not hold rush until the Spring semester so you may be able to go straight in and attend recruitment with the rest of your class and have another avenue to meet people rather quickly. I would just set up a zoom with your admissions counselor and feel them out while you get the information you need to make a decision. Good Luck!

Thanks so much for your input! I scheduled an appointment with my admissions counselor so that should give me more of an idea. Glad to hear the perspective of a Pepperdine parent because that is where I will most likely end up if not taking SMU spring

Just received an email inviting 21D to apply for Rotunda Scholars Program. Not sure what it is, but the deadline is 04/20, so we have some time to research.
