We did not. Our son has 4.7 WGPA, 1350 SAT. Waiting to hear from Cox in January and fingers crossed for some merit assistance.
Hi,I am a mom posting here for the first time. My daughter got accepted under Early Action, but she had applied under regular decision! She applied in late September but indicated regular admission, not early action. The email that she received says, âupdate on early action decisionâ. We are very confused. Though we are happy but wondering how it works.
Early action is just an early decision, not a formal commitment to attend. The EA deadline was 11/1. The regular decision deadline is 1/15. Congratulations on admittance. Do you have any other questions?
Thanks so much for your reply. I was wondering we selected regular decision in the Common App and she submitted her application early as she was done with it, I thought we will get decision later. I heard from someone that you get less scholarship if you apply under early action compared to regular decision. I am quite naive about this as this is our first time going through the process on our own. I think we will get the scholarship info after the holidays are over. SMU is my daughterâs first choice but the fee is very high compared to UTD she got into. Really praying for a decent scholarship.
Youâre confusing early decision, which is a commitment to attend, versus early or regular decision which is non-binding. SMU wants your kid to attend. After your FAFSA is complete, they will work out grants, work study and low interest loans that work. They may also be flexible with housing if youâre local. It takes a bit of time but our experience has been great.
Got it. Thanks so much for your prompt replies. God bless you.
My daughter got deferred for EA. She is at a top IB program at an international school in the US. She has 3.9 unweighted-- all IB classes, 33 on the ACT, started her own design business, great recs, varsity soccer. We have not been able to visit and I wonder if that was part of it. We are from the Northeast, so I thought that might help.
Do you all know if merit is still possible when youâve been deferred?
She sounds very talented. Besides not visits she show much interest along the way?
For what itâs worth, I saw that EA deferrals were notified on March 8, 9 and 11 the last three years.
What were is stats?
Any idea when Cox decisions will be released?
She hasnât received any letter regarding the merit scholarship so we are assuming she wonât get it. We are waiting to know about the financial aid info. I am not very knowledgeable regarding the aid but as far as I know grants are better but not loans as loans have to be repaid. There is no way we can pay the fee unless we get good financial aid.
The decisions were out last month if you are talking about EA.
I am talking about admission to the Cox Business School at SMU. Those should be coming out any day.
wondering sameâŚ
Ok, understood.
Hi, can anyone tell me how long does it take to receive the need based financial aid. package. I got to know from an SMU student that the Financial Aid Department works very slow.
Hopefully Cox direct decisions come out soon since theyâre back on campus. I believe they want to enroll 300 which is 20% of the target student body. I also heard that the vast majority of those that didnât get Cox still enrolled due to attractive other options, like Engineering MIS/Statistics/Econ, and ability to minor in business with 18 hours (6 courses).
Last year we received an email in late January about financial aid but weâd already committed based on the fin aid calculator. They wanted the FAFSA and CSS complete before explaining the package of federal and institutional funds (grants, loans and work study).
In order to be considered for all federally funded need-based aid, please complete the FAFSA online at fafsa.ed.gov.
In order to be considered for all institutionally funded need-based aid, please complete the CSS Profile⢠online at cssprofile.org.
If you or your family have questions about the financial aid process, please contact the Division of Enrollment Services by email at enrol_serv@smu.edu or by phone at 214-768-3417 or 800-323-0672.
Actually she received an email regarding verification by the financial aid department. Actually the Social Security Administration messed up her citizenship status. We submitted the documents in December itself after getting the email. The email stated that it may take up to 4 weeks for the process.I am wondering why you committed to SMU before looking at the need based financial aid. We need to know if they will provide 100% need based aid. Also, we are totally new to this process. As far as I did my research online and tried to understand the financial aid, grants are important as loans need to be paid.
My daughter applied ED so her decision was binding. The EFC proved reliable.
After the four weeks, definitely get in touch with the financial aid office to check on status. Yes, grants are better than loans or work study.
Thanks for always replying to my queries. Good luck to your daughter. Sure, will be in touch with the financial aid office.
