Hey, im going to SMU next year and I was thinking about rushing. Had a quick question regarding fraternities and race. I know many southern fraternities usually dont bid on african americas, however what about other races? I'm persian (black hair, tan skin) and was wondering if that lowers my chances of getting a bid. Be honest with me guys, thanks!

If you personality meshes well with the guys, I really don’t think it will be a problem. I’m pretty sure all of our fraternities have guys of multiple races in them.

ok so as a current student who is a minority (indian) in a fraternity I can safely say that SMU fraternities are definitely less ethnically diverse than the student body as a whole, but this is pretty much true anywhere there is a greek system. HOWEVER, the fraternities at SMU are comprised of students from all over the country - most if not all of the houses would never be considered “southern” or comparable to fraternities at an SEC school. if you fit in with the guys, they will take you in. if not, they won’t, but it won’t be because of your race. the greek system at SMU isn’t for everyone, but I think the negative stereotypes exist only if you have a negative outlook on life in general.

I don’t think SMU has been considered a southern school in quite a while.

what are considered the “top” fraternities at SMU? Do most people get a bid from at least one? And i’ve heard that even though rush is in the spring, most fraternities know if they will bid you during the first semester, is that true? (Midwestern, white male)
