My daughter is still deciding on which college to go to. Her financial aid package was very good from SMU. Does anyone have experience with the second year package? Does the first year offer "reel you in"? Should she expect close to the same the second year. I get vague answers from FA.

You should probably try posting this in the SMU sub-forum. Have you looked to see if any of the financial aid offered this year includes scholarships that are not renewable?

FWIW, as the parent of a college junior (not at SMU) I am really not hearing stories about private colleges dramatically changing F.A. packages for kids after freshman year except when family circumstances have changed or the kid failed to meet some gpa requirement.

^ I totally agree with this. It would get around the blogosphere pretty quickly if a school significantly changed FA packages in the second year.

A college has no interest in reeling you in and then making the subsequent years unaffordable. It would hurt their statistics about completion rates, attrition, etc, for the almighty rankings…
