I am creating this board for Spring 2020 applicants who wish to post about their admissions status, those who have questions, or just looking for some people in the same boat.
A little about me: I am a Transfer student with 50+ hours applying for a BFA in Film. I submitted my application on 9/16 and as of 10/02 my portal has reflected that all my materials are in and up for review. Hello, where are you transferring from? I’m planning to transfer to SMU next year as well, applying for Fashion Media :). May I ask how did you get your transferable credits hours up to 50+? Based on their University curriculum, I’m currently at 43 after completing the courses from the Foundation and Breadth & Depth components. for the Proficiencies & Experiences, which classes did you take at your college? I really have no idea what else to take since it doesn’t specify on the website…

Hi! Thanks for your comment. I am currently transferring from San Antonio College. I have my associates in Radio, TV and Broadcasting which gives me about 60ish credits. I did the Transfer Campus Visit to SMU over the summer where (along with going over the transfer equivalency guide) I was told that most students with an associates will have 50 or so transferable credits but I won’t know for sure until my credits are evaluated during the admissions process. One thing I might suggest is that when you are looking up your credits on the guide is to use different schools for reference. When I audited my credits using just the SAC catalog I only had about 34 credits but when I also looked through the ACC and North Texas CC equivalency guides I had a lot more. These credits had my same course numbers too they just weren’t showing up on the SAC guide for some reason. Fashion Media seems like such a cool major. I think I actually put it down as my second choice lol. I hope this helps!
Hey, thanks so much for the input! I might check that out. Sadly, the advisors haven’t been very helpful answering my questions even when I visit the campus :(. I’m still putting together my application atm. I’m also very interested in film & media. But fashion is always my top choice. Glad to hear you might consider that major

I’m so sorry you’ve had a less than stellar experience with the advisers. I applied through the SMU website. Mostly because with my BFA application I had to submit an additional portfolio to Meadows and I thought it might make things easier if I just went that route. I was originally hoping to apply through Apply Texas because I saw that they offered that and I could just copy and paste an older application from another school but for some reason they didn’t have the Spring 2020 application open yet. Are you applying for the Spring or Fall semester?
Oh that’s right I almost forgot about the portfolio. I also checked the other day for the Apply Texas and it wasn’t opened so I went with Common app. Well, for me initially I was gonna apply for Spring but now I have to push it back for Fall 2020. It’s because I’m trying for their Transfer scholarship as well and one of the requirements is I need to complete a minimum of 50 credits hours. Are you applying for any scholarship?
Tbh the transfer process for me has been stressful since none of my friends went there. The counselors at my school also aren’t familiar with SMU so most of the time I feel like I’m struggling alone. It’s so nice to just have someone like you to talk to. I’m truly appreciated and thankful

Oh no please I am happy to help whenever I can! Lol I also didn’t think anyone would reply to this thread since this forum is so dry so I appreciate you back! Yes I’m definitely vying for that transfer scholarship. Along with my app I sent in 3 letters of recommendations and 2 additional essays. (I really only submitted the essays because I already had them from applying to another school and I worked really hard on them and they’re basically the best things I have ever written so I didn’t want them to go to waste). I know what you mean, this school wasn’t even on my radar until I had already applied and then was subsequently rejected from another school. And I know this is what someone who might be bitter that they got rejected would say but I honestly think SMU will be a way better match for me. Hopefully your counselors will be more of a help. If not I think this is the time of year where the admissions counselors travel around to their districts so maybe you can meet with them at some point.
Yes, this thread is turning into a conversation between us two lol so I think I should DM you but then I don’t really know how. Do they even let you message other members here? I’m sorry you got rejected from the other school. It might be a blessing in disguise, you never know. I really hope you got accepted this time alongside a scholarship and maybe we could be on the same campus someday

Yeah I’m not sure how to DM on this thing either. I looked it up and apparently you have to be a Junior member? Anyways I would give you my Facebook or something but I don’t really want to post that here. I’m thinking about creating a discord where we can chat more over there. Oh I actually have never heard of discord before… I looked it up and apparently it’s a site for gamers? Correct me if I’m wrong but I will sign up with the same username. See you there lol.
A lot of people use it for gaming but loads of different people use it. It’s kind of like the 2019 version of IM. CC won’t let me put the link to the discord here but I made a post on the SMU reddit page where you can find it. Just click it and you’ll be in the group! I applied for Spring 2020 too! All my admissions supplements are in so I’m just waiting- it’s been nearly three weeks since everything showed up as checked off in the portal. Anyone have any ideas of when the decisions will come out/how long it takes? I know it’s on a rolling basis.
Hey there! Thanks for your reply. I’ve been waiting for a little more than a month for my decision but I think that’s mostly due to waiting on my portfolio to be reviewed.
