Hi there! Is anyone in the SMU theatre program or is there anyone who auditioned for the SMU theatre program who can tell me a little about the process. I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks so much!

I auditioned for SMU Theatre back in January, and it was pretty simple. I assume you already signed up for an audition (on the Meadows website), but you basically just go to the Greer Garson Theatre a little before the appointed time. There's a short information session where they tell you about the difference between Acting BFA and Theatre Studies BFA, then you go on a tour of the theatre building. When you come back for the auditions, they take you one at a time into the room where they ask you some questions (like an interview, as well as to discover which BFA program you want to do) and they have you do two monologues and a song. Depending on what they think, I guess, they'll ask you to do some improvisations with your monologues, or with s monologue that's on your resume. It's pretty random, though, because they didn't have me do anything and I got in, but they had my friend do lots of things and she also got in.

It would be a good idea to bring a portfolio, headshot, resume, etc. just in case. It's not necessary, but I saw a lot of kids carrying a folder with all that stuff in it. It would lend you a more professional look, of course. They say they'll get back to you in three to four weeks, but I got my letter just the week after, so it really depends.

Were you accepted into for acting BFA or theatre studies BFA? Any idea how many students they accept into either?

Thanks

I was accepted into BFA Theatre Studies. The class (both BFAs) is meant to be 30 students total, with equal amounts in each. I believe they accept between 15 and 18 students in each one, just in case some people decide not to go.

Four years have passed since the previous post on this thread, and nothing has changed. My D’s audition experience was the same as above, and she received her letter of acceptance one week later, noting that it had been written the day after she auditioned. We are over-the-moon happy that she got in, as SMU Theatre is among the top schools in the nation for BFAs. Whether it’s her final choice will depend on scholarships offered.
