I am EA and submitted my deposit in mid-January. I am debating between which dorm to put as my first choice.
I really like Snitchcock’s location, especially because I hear that Bartlett has better food, and I am potentially a walk-on athlete. However, I have heard many weird stories about the dorm, and it sounds like it is too quirky for me.
BJ seems like it has a bigger variety of people who also go out more. Although I am not a big partier, I feel like I would fit better here.
I am requesting a single. The communal bathrooms and other features in these dorms are fairly similar, correct? Sorry if this question seems entirely unnecessary, but I am torn between these two options.
You will not get a single in Hitchcock, but you may in Snell. You will not get a single in BJ, but a double with separate rooms. Snitchcock is closer to classes, but less close of a house. BJ has smaller houses which are more socially knit but divided, and farther from classes
No Blackstone, two rooms attached in the middle by a kitchen/bathroom. Maybe BJ does have singles but I thought they were mostly upperclassmen, just like in Hitchcock no one gets singles till their second year. I thought firsties in BJ got doubles which were two rooms connected, so that you had to go through one to get to the other when you entered, but perhaps I’m wrong. The OP could look at the University of Chicago housing site though to check.
BJ is mostly singles. There is only like 1 double per floor per house. It’s fairly easy for 1st years to get them, and no, they aren’t connecting, at least not in the houses I’ve seen.
Hitchcock has doubles, Snell is all singles. If you deposit early it’s easy to get a single in Snell as a 1st year. There are some connected singles like you describe in Hitchcock.
Just unfortunately ate at Bartlett again. If you don’t want to starve for the year then I suggest going to BJ and eating at Cathey, because Bartlett is absolutely awful.
