Someone informed me that the ivies have some snobby people. The ultra-rich that believe the students there who still need to work and receive finaid are 2nd class. Does anyone know the validity of these claims? Are ivies that snobbish that they judge those who are not extremely privileged and do not wear Rolex and Armani/Gucci?

I'm sure there are snobs just about everywhere. Undoubtedly, there are also plenty of down-to-earth folks. You'll find your niche wherever you go. ... People who judge by whether you wear a Rolex or a Timex aren't worth knowing--and I'm hoping they're in the minority at the ivies and elsewhere!

most people here are pretty relaxed. the hipsters can be a little something else and there are people who think highly of themselves but you don't have to talk to them. At some other schools it might be more pronounced.

It's more pronounced at other schools. There are some people here (and everywhere) who are extremely wealthy and tend to have friends from the same socioeconomic class, but that is very, very far from the norm. Most of the groups of friend I know vary widely in terms of socioeconomic status and financial aid / work.

Incidentally, if anyone is judging people who 'do not wear Rolex and Armani/Gucci', they need to get with the times.

it's not cool to be snobby at brown.

i have yet to meet a stereotypically snobby person here, like you are talking about.

i have met some jerks or people who are snobby in other ways, but thats' everywhere! and for the record, much less so at brown than i would say other schools (my old school was filled with snobs...too hipster for you, too rich for you, to greek for you, etc)

thanks. haha I got accepted in to Brown, but from that I got a little scared cause my family is not exceptionally wealthy. defiantly not enough to sport rolex and gucci everyday. Thanks, thats good to know.

I'm going to Brown next year and everyone I've met who goes to the school or is affiliated with teh school has been really down to earth and helpful.

there are rich people here but you wouldn't know who they are. it's definitely not "cool' to flaunt wealth here.

and there are few things that are "cool" or "not cool"

i wish wearing big hipster sunglasses was NOT COOL

...i haven't noticed

lol, the hipster crowd is definitely there and visible - but more because their fashion choices stand out in a crowd than for any other reason.

While it certainly isn't very cool to flaunt wealth in most circles here (as an aside, I don't think wearing a rolex has been cool in any social circle ANYWHERE since the mid-90's - the OP seems to have very TV-inspired sense of how rich people act), there are some people who do it. I definitely know who some of the rich people are. It's just that that isn't very common, and certainly not the norm or something I would feel compelled to emulate.

maybe it's more that i just don't care :) haha
