With the snow apocalypse Juno that just hit us, it got me wondering. Do boarding schools have snow days? Let me know!
It doesn’t happen often, but many New England schools called off classes today due to a travel ban. Check out schools’ Instagrams for snowy photos.
Very very rarely. This is especially true in schools with a high boarding percentage.
Groton had a snow day yesterday and they have a high boarding percentage. The only nod that the Hotchkiss kids got was that they did not have to be in dress code
@calrenoma What did Hotchkiss do with day students? Wasn’t there a travel ban in CT?
Masters (Dobbs Ferry, NY) had an early close on Monday and was closed yesterday. It has a large day student population and given the various states of emergency invoked by NJ/NY/CT governors, it was the the right call despite the relatively non-event Juno was on its western edge.
In her 4 years at St. Andrew’s (Middletown, DE), I don’t recall a snow day. Though they might have had a day off during/after one of the recent hurricanes (Sandy, maybe?). School is 100% boarding.
@SevenDad Are there any teachers at SAS who live off-campus? Would they be able to get there? (Although, how badly was DE even hit?)
@stargirl3: Yes, there are several (many?) teacher who live off campus. I don’t know how their classes are handled in the event they cannot make it in…I guess in the same way things would happen if they were out sick or out for a conference, etc.
I don’t think DE was affected much by Juno. At least not that my daughter has reported.
At my BS, day students were invited to stay on campus and classes were still held, albeit with no dress code!
Lawrenceville canceled classes and called it a Headmaster’s Snow Day.
Cate has a tradition that if a student can hit the headmaster with a snowball of snow that fell on campus, classes are called off. It supposedly happened a few years ago.
@stargirl3: What if the headmaster decided to stay inside the whole day? Would they just run in and hit him with a snowball in his office?
Student: Hello Headmaster Bob!
throws snowball
snowball smacks headmaster in face
Headmaster: NO SCHOOL!!! waves hands wildly as the snow plops from his nose to the ground
student and headmaster start doing the Harlem Shake, other students and faculty then join in
I know one of the schools I’m interested in cancelled classes and just skiid and sled all day which is super cute. They called it a Heads’ Holiday or something.
We’re starting school later than usual tomorrow.
School is cancelled for me tomorrow. Pretty happy about that. I get to miss health.
Aagh only delayed opening for us.
