snow gear

This question comes from someone who has only seen snow fall once in their life and a Brown 2010er.

What sort of snow clothing/shoes should someone coming to Brown bring?

coming from someone who has lived in a country which is on the equator, and has never seen snow fall ever in her lifetime. thank you for asking! i was just wondering about that too. haha.

bring some type of winter jacker, like a parka or something thats water proof on the outside and warm on the inside. also, gloves and a warm hat are great. a pair of boots, such as timberlands, work perfect in the snow

i dont think a parka would be strong enough.

www.llbean.com

LAYERS! I had a down parka for the deepest winter and a nice wool jaket for slightly warmer weather. Underneath I would usually have a sweatshirt or sweater, as well as a long-sleeved t-shirt and, on the coldest days, a tank top under that.

You will want to have a scarf, a hat or earmuffs, warm gloves, boots that have good traction to trudge around in snow, warm socks, and lots of chapstick. You can worry about buying some of this stuff when you get here, though, since it won't be winter for a few months.

You'll also want a lighter fall jacket for when it's 40-50 degrees.

For other things -- have flannel of jersey sheets (I wrote about this in another thread, I think -- these are my favorite: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=102743&RN=18&). I had jersey sheets and a down blanket with a flannel duvet for winter and it was amazing. Not cheap, but sooo glad I invested.

I'm not worrying about the clothes or bedding, but what sort of footwear will I need? I lived in the desert, the rural south, and the tropics all my life so I figure I'm going to need something more than flip flops and flats.

A nice pair of boots will do you wonders in the snow.

It won't be that cold in Providence when you arrive...wait until after you arrive to what you need. You'll see what others have, and get "advice" from those who have spent their lives in New England.

Lands End and LLBean are great for Mail order. If $$ are an issue, there are lots of 2nd hand stores in Providence that will have winter clothes.
