Snow in NOLA?

When was the last time classes were canceled because of the "threat" of snow?

<a href="http://www.nola.com/education/index.ssf/2014/01/tulane_university_cancels_tues.html">http://www.nola.com/education/index.ssf/2014/01/tulane_university_cancels_tues.html</a></p>

I have never known classes to be canceled for snow, and if they get as much as they are predicting, it is the most I can remember. It will be interesting to see how much actually falls.

My D specifically chose to apply to warm weather schools for health issues. She was not a happy camper when I talked with her yesterday. She especially wasn’t happy when I suggested that she not drive anywhere for a couple of days. She did calm down a bit when I reassured her that I knew she knew how to drive in it, it was everyone else (along with the lack of sand/salt trucks) that I was worried about.

The entire city is shut down for 2 days. It is more the treat of ice and not being able to treat it as easily as we do up here. And the extreme cold temperatures. Many houses in NOLA are not built to sustain these cold temperatures. I know plenty of people that don’t have central heat. Everyone I know has received calls from Entergy warning them of power outages for possibly 3-5 days. On the positive side many people have generatiers already but I know there was not a space heater to be found anywhere!

My S finds it humorous that the city is completely crippled - we are from the North and the weather in NOLA is nothing compared to what we are used to. I agree with bajamm that is is everyone else you have to worry about.

On another note - I can’t get used to this new form on CC - how did you even see where to start a new thread idad???

I don’t even see an edit area - I wrote “is is” instead of “it is” and I do not see how to fix it! Blah…I now realize you need to “preview” before posting - it is the only spot where you can edit.

You can edit a post up to an hour after you submit. A little gear wheel should be near your post and if you click that you can edit. But only for an hour. At least that’s how I interpreted it

I think that is right about the edit. Also unlike before, where it didn’t show you edited it at all if you did it within 5 minutes, it now says it any time you edit. I have mixed feelings about this new format, but I am waiting until I get used to it more to make a final judgement. Not that it matters, it isn’t like they would change it back if I don’t like it, lol.

I don’t know. I’ve lived in Boston, Denver, and Philly, and each of them has been crippled for a week or more while I’ve lived there. I don’t think most Americans have much room to snicker about NO’s problems today. Half an inch of ice is almost as impassable in Green Bay as it is in NOLA.

I do think it’s important to give yourself permission to not go to work today because of the weather. Too many people who don’t often commute in dangerous weather insist on going to work and, if they make it there and back, don’t get very much done anyway because no one else was in the office. Relax. Heed the work of nature.

Tulane just posted that classes are cancelled again for tomorrow, though they are planning on being open on Thursday.

My DS and his GF were supposed to fly from NOLA to CA today. Flight was cancelled yesterday. Hopefully they can get out tomorrow. Meanwhile I am in Atlanta. At least I made it home, though it took 4 hours to go 7 miles, and had my share of challenges. My DH is stuck in his office, its 12 degrees out and the bridges over the river are all sitll iced over. And thee are abandoned cars and accidents everywhere. Not pretty. When it warms up a bit I’ll go shovel the driveway If possible (its all ice) again. Did it yesterday, enough to make it up into my garage.
