With the snow about to hit the east coast.. what happens to school? Most, but not all the kids are boarders. Do they still close the school because off campus staff, teachers and other day students?

At my daughter’s school, classes are rarely cancelled due to snow. Day students are allowed to stay in the dorms if they can make arrangements with a friend. Otherwise, they stay home if the roads are too bad. Her school did cancel classes for a couple of days during Hurricane Sandy, but that was because the campus was without power.The school does have a generator, but it provides limited power - enough to operate the kitchen and heat,and for some emergency lights. When I was a student in boarding school many years ago, I remember classes being cancelled due to snow only once. We spent a good deal of that day sledding down the South Lawn Hill on cafeteria trays.

DS’s school does not close for snow. If there is extreme weather, essential personnel (i.e. health services and dining hall staff) still have to report to work, and bag-meals may be offered instead of regular dining hall service. The school has back up generators.

No snow days. Teachers live on campus or within a short walk. School has multiple back-up generators in case of power failures - as are faculty homes. I know my D was discouraged one day to see even the Headmaster out clearing walks early one morning. And parents are kept informed by email. Day students can stay in the dorms if needed. Since many of the buildings are interconnected including the dining halls, walking outside between most classes can often be avoided. Although they would need snowmobiles and skis to get to the gym way up on the hill. I’d consider walking up there cruel and unusual punishment. It’s a hike even when the weather is good. :)

A few were closed - one showed open studios, gym and rink, etc. on their Facebook page. Most had classes as usual. Many schools have generators, and continue as usual. In CT and MA there was a ban on road travel.

SPS had classes but this afternoon’s games are cancelled.

From Choate’s auto-alert system (v-mail/text) today:

Emma cancelled its half-day of classes Friday (prior to a long weekend), and asked parents who were planning on driving to pick up their d’s to do so on Thursday night. Many students who’d planned trips home via plane found their flights cancelled; some stayed in the (open) dorms and some went home with day students or nearby boarders.

@ChoatieMom,

My kid will be so jealous. She got emails yesterday from snow-bound teachers who attached the homework and a deadline for returning them by email. She mused that the two feet+ snow should have been cause for an extra sleep-in day Guess it’s proof I’m getting my money’s worth.

^Ha! Maybe I should ask for a refund. What’s $50K divided by … :)
