snow!

Questions:

Does it usually come earlier at UVA?

How long can we expect this snow cover to last?

-- A Mainer.

The first snow fall last year was on January 17th (I only know this because of the date stamp on photos of CavDog).

How long it stays depends on the temperature. There have been times when a dusting of snow is completely gone by the afternoon. Sometimes, though, the temp drops and melted snow freezes, which makes the sidewalks and roads even more slippery than on the day the snow fell.

Yeah, snow tends to go away pretty quickly but evening classes can be let out early or cancelled due to form(ed|ing) ice. We get very little snow.

oh man i am sick of snow... first a lot in new york then some here :(. Maine must be even worse..

When I grow up and have enough money to give back to UVA, I'm going to write them a check and instruct them to buy salt, lots of salt, and actually use it. I just came from Thornton across Newcomb (bookstore trip) then home, and it was TERRIBLE. Especially over by you Dean J, it was especially bad, so watch out! They seem to only sand, and even that effort is sporadic at best. It was like this last year when that ice storm came through: they canceled bus service, but the sidewalks were an utter mess. I'm sure they're doing what they can/think they should be doing, but it just isn't enough and it's only going to get worse. Maybe they're trying to be environmentally friendly, or salt just got cut out of the budget. Either way, it stinks.

ah, the ice.

I was going to class with a friend and I was like what the....where's the salt? And she was like sand is better for the environment and the concrete so UVa tries not to use salt. Now, I love trees as much as the next person, but I care about my tush MORE. Then, I was going up the stairs and noticed they were pretty bad. Of all the places to put down salt/sand, stairs seems especially important. Well, apparently, it's not a priority. I saw at least 2 people slip and fall down the stairs in front of my dorm (within a span of 5 minutes around 9:30 PM) and I thought no big. No, in fact it was a huge deal. When I got to the stairs, they were COVERED in black ice, the railing was covered with ice, essentially everything was covered in ice. I had to climb over a bush to get to my dorm and I was wearing rainboots=great traction.

And then the bus service. They stopped Northline service at some point so some people in Hereford had to walk down with all of the ice. Way to go. I was so disappointed today by the efforts of UVa to keep their students safe. Grass takes a couple of weeks to grow back in the spring. Broken bones take much longer.

The Chemistry department needs to have a talk with whoever is in charge of this stuff. In fact, someone in high school chemistry could explain freezing point depression. I almost broken my wrist today so I feel no pity. When I find out who's in charge of this, they're going to get a letter.

well they were just starting to scrape and sand at 9am when I had my first class (they were doing the bridge across to Curry from Brown when I saw them), so chances are they hadn't gotten to your dorm by that time yet. my suggestion would be to cancel classes that start before they start sanding, since it isn't particularly safe to ask students to walk around in this stuff.

at least classes are typically cancelled when this stuff happens at night (like, I've had multiple evening Curry classes cancelled for ice and Eschool last year cancelled all classes after 5pm due to ice one day).

This weather sucks. At least the rain is helping things melt.
I did see salt on the stairs over by Newcomb today, which was VERY good, because that's what was most slippery yesterday it seemed like. Elsewhere, sand seemed to be it. The bridge on McCormick over 29 was still slippery when I went through at 9:30am, as were many other sidewalks. The area in front of the Rotunda and the paths closest to the MedSchool were still iced over, even this afternoon. It's pretty suprising that they didn't atleast try to sand it, because almost all residents behind the Corner walk that way. Ughhh.

hazel, the first time i ventured outside yesterday was around 12:30.

okay well then that's pretty shady on uva's part

lol it's really funny to be reading this thread buried in tons of snow here in Michigan. Southerners+snow= funny

yeah my brother goes to umich... haha... glad to be here. also i am from philly and it is usually worse up there.
