Blizzard forces widespread closures of government offices, schools

Let the revelry begin.

It's been an impressive inaugural year for the 2010-2011 incoming freshmen. Let's hope each following one can live up to this!

MN Badger I’ll see ya out there on Bascom for the snowball fight, I’ll be the one takin heads off haha

Hahaha yayyy snowball fight! It’s been such a cool freshman year, the rose bowl and now SNOW DAY :)

Boy has UW gone soft. Never closed for snow until recently and now a few flakes and they close it down. At least they got the bball game in last night. Great win.
Have a fun day and don’t hurt anyone–or yourself.

UW is not going soft - the Governor declared a state of emergency in 29 counties and activated the National Guard. The Mayor advised people to stay off the streets as they were virtually impassable. Drifts in my driveway on the far west side of Madison were 3-4 feet high and Madison Metro cancelled bus service. Even if students could make it to class, many instructors would have been unable to. Our street wasn’t plowed until 4:30 p.m.

[The Badger Herald: News: Snow forces UW to cancel 1st ever full day of classes](http://badgerherald.com/news/2009/12/09/snow_forces_uw_to_ca.php)

Like it never snowed in Wisconsin before.

They had a snow day in the 1940’s- per my mother, 25 years later, in the early 1970’s there was one, now more than one in the past 5 years- all due to huge amounts of snow. Can’t account for any in the other eras, but not something new to this generation…
