Ironic considering every Prof or grad student friend who is about to enter/on the tenure-track job market or is up for tenure has stated one quality every hiring committee of a given academic department emphasizes beyond the quality of one’s dissertation and research is that of “collegiality”.
Something which is considered exceedingly important as members of the department, including the hiring/tenure committee need to weigh whether they can live and work in close quarters for decades with this potential new hire/prospective tenure candidate.
“collegiality”.
IN this instance-“Prof or grad student friend who is about to enter/on the tenure-track job market or is up for tenure”
Collegiality refers to the applicants ability to get along with fellow COLLEAGUES, not with the students.
Its up to the tenured professors in each dept to “approve” any new tenure track faculty hire.
They dont want people who wont pull their weight regarding teaching classes, bringing in research $$, publishing, and being agreeable and easy to collaborate with the other faculty in the dept.
In other words- they want someone who will “fit in” to the dept.
As to Nordstroms: I so must agree. I went in to shop for a beachside wedding I had to attend in less than two hours, and had these wonderful young sales ladies start a dressing closet for me, bring out as many items that might properly accessorize my outfit once I finally decided on a beautiful three piece silk ensemble, and then help me to find the perfect…ugh, as Steve Urkel would have said, unmentionables to carry off the ensemble seamlessly. I both looked and felt fabulous after working with those young ladies.
