I don't know what the actual quoted speeds are for cable internet and on campus internet, but I know in practice, internet is much faster on campus. I'm on cable now in my off-campus apartment and it kinda...sucks here in Ithaca. The only gripe with on-campus internet is the 5gig/month bandwidth limit but overage charges are so cheap that I didn't let that stop me when I was on campus (and no I was not dling porn...).

internet is 10 mbps only in the older dorms. Mews and court-kay-bauer all have 100 mbps internet, and red rover, the wireless, is 54 mbps.

what is DC++?

it's the local file-sharing service at Cornell, much like kazaa or limewire. It's only between people who are at Cornell and it's centered around a hub or one computer. I think that last time I checked there were 19 terabytes of info being shared on there from movies to music to computer games.

is internet in dorms wireless too? and how good is the red rover service? can you just like sit outside with a wifi laptop and use internet?

em how fast can the 100 mbps internet download? I have little idea about networking and I am really a BT fan..

for wireless, it depends on where you are. There is wireless in all the tv lounges, and study lounges. Some rooms get maybe 2 bars or so depending on how close your room is to a lounge with wireless. All dorm rooms have high-speed hook-ups with CAT5 cables provided do unless you're in someone else's room, you won't even need wireless. Sitting outside...I've never tried...I doubt it'll be warm enough to do that for most of the year.

For DC++ one can get downloads as fast at 15 MB/s. Mostly it'll be at least 500 KB/s. It all depends on whom you're downloading from, where you're downloading from, and how many downloads or uploads are going on.

Definitely getting ahead of myself here, but how do you set up DC++ once we're at Cornell?

Getting back to the townhouses... I live in one and they're actually kind of amazing! With all the walking you're gonna have to be doing at Cornell, an extra few minutes are really not a big deal at all, and they're no farther from food than any other dorm. There's no way I could fit all my crap at school without a dining room, living room, etc... you'll never get a better living space for the money you're paying!

should i assume that the info on the housing site is for this year's students, not us? (i.e. applying for housing)

lol i wish it was for us!!

whoa, setting up DC++, ummm, just ask someone once you get there, you are getting ahead of yourself, you need to download the program and get the hub name and then share at least 500 MB of stuff, can be anything.

sweeeeeeeeet

yeah, pretty much everyone knows of dc++. If not, then find some random CoE kid; it is a prerequisite to be tech savvy
