the schedule says the university will be on break the thursday and friday of thanksgiving week.
in the past i've seen my friends coming to town about a week before thanksgiving day, meaning they didn't have classes the entire thanksgiving week (or they just didn't attend, i dunno)
i heard that some professors will cancel classes the thanksgiving week to let students go back home early, or don't take attendance
what is the general thanksgiving rule in cal?

You can never tell. I've had students have assignments due the day before break starts. Some professors will cancel class the day before. I doubt they'd do much more than that, though.

Oh, and some students will leave early regardless of whether the professor actually cancelled class or not.

Yea, you can never tell. As a general rule, the higher your class is, and the smaller your classes are, or the more chill your professor (younger professors especially) the more likely it is tat they will take concensus votes and cancel class if most of the students want to go home early that week. Though you could also get a sadistic witch (she also assigned papers to be due the Monday following the big football games. That was extremely annoying.) like I had my first semester that forced us to be in class the day before Thanksgiving, and talk about how the holiday is a racist farce. ;) Fortunately, from my experience, most GSIs or Profs will cancel classes at least on Wednesday.

are there midterms before thanksgiving? or just class? i need to buy plane tickets..so need to decide if wednesday night is ok haha

It depends; you could be having midterms right before Thanksgiving depending on what classes you're taking. I think that most of mine were the week before or even a little earlier (since once you're back from Thanksgiving, you've only got two weeks until finals, so I'm thinking that midterms are earlier)

As for classes, I remember that my profs were pretty tough about it; I even had a 4-5pm on that Wednesday. Section though is more lax, most GSIs will cancel it. But not for the whole week; just Wednesday
