Ah I certainly hope so. That's what I figured, but yeah Science Olympiad and Prom are Saturday so I def need to be back Friday. I figured if I was coming all the way from Alabama, I might as well stay more than one night. They just have not replied to my email/phone call yet.

Also, even though the plane ticket is only $113 right now, (cheap i know), should I wait to make the reservation until we get our admit weekend packet in a few weeks? I know they provide travel vouchers to a lot of their admits, but I am unsure of how these work (ie if they are reimbursements or actual plane ticket discounts, etc). Can someone please provide some insight? Thanks.

Marchmadness, I think you have to pay for your own fare, and Stanford will reimburse you later. That's what happened last year.
However, there is a limit on how much it will reimburse.
BTW, keep a copy of your ticket, that's your proof of purchase.
I don't see why not make the reservation now, if you do know the date of Admit Weekend, and you are sure you are attending.

I highly recommend going to admit weekend and getting tickets as soon as possible. Admit weekend was really the deciding factor in a long involved process for me and I really haven’t been disappointed. I agree that the issues with it being a dry weekend and fairly low-key for residents means that you don’t get the most accurate idea of typical social life. Your biggest asset will most likely be the other admit weekend attendees. You guys are going to Stanford to find out what this place is really like and if it is right for you. Most of the housing at Stanford during freshman year is around other freshman. If you meet and enjoy the people around you at admit weekend chances are you will see these people again in classes or at social events. So if you like what you see of your classmates and have a good time exploring Stanford together I would say you have made good use of your weekend. Also, I came across this site trying to look up admit weekend dates because I believe my band is going to play for you guys that weekend! So come and enjoy Stanford for the weekend, it is really worth it.

p.s- I am writing this at Los Tuxtlas Rainforest Biological Reserve in Mexico where I am taking a Stanford class over spring break…awesome…

How do we know if stanford will reimburse us for travel expenses? If we didn’t get anything telling us that in our admit package, does that mean that they won’t be giving us travel grants?

I was sent a separate travel grant letter with a reimbursement form a couple months ago (admitted early action). I thought they sent that to everyone, but maybe not. I would be careful if you didn’t receive the form - maybe they don’t offer reimbursement to everyone…

But on the form they stated the limits for travel reimbursement as: up to $200 for California residents, $500 for those traveling outside of California, totals including up to $70 in local ground transportation.

Last year my S was admitted SCEA with significant FA, and he had no offer of travel reimbursement for admit weekend. My guess is that they only pay travel costs for a few applicants. I’m sure the admissions office will tell you if you ask.

Ms. Keene was telling me about Admit Weekend awhile back and she said if finances are an issue, Stanford would cover the expenses…I don’t know how they determine if they are an issue though…haha.

I wonder how they select who receives the travel grants; my family income is over $100K. Maybe it’s because I’m traveling from Maryland, and it’s a cross-country trip.

Okay so admit weekend begins Thursday morning all through Saturday night if I recall my admit packet correctly. It’s downstairs and I’m not about to get up and I’m too lazy at the moment to even open up a new browser to look the dates up. Haha, anyway… I’m going to fly in Friday morning due to this county banquet thingamabobber I’ve committed to taking place on Thursday. Does anyone know if that’ll throw the weekend off entirely? It would still be worthwhile, I hope?

And since my parents want to meet me up at Stanford on Friday as well, though they’d be driving up, would it be advisable for them to drag my four little brothers along? They say it would be an unforgettable cultural experience for the kids, but holy cow I’m just thinking that it’ll be such a hassle to tote them around all day. I don’t know what to tell them, and it depends whether or not those tours and all those workshops we are scheduled for can accomodate a hoard of little boys.

Feedback appreciated, but I have a feeling they’ll all come rolling in to Stanford regardless. :)

There is plenty to do on campus for your little brothers:
go up to the top of Hoover Tower and look at the view
go to the bookstore (Stanford gear on the second floor, kid’s books on the main floor)
go to the Cantor Museum (it’s free)
go to Jamba Juice
walk around campus and look at all of the fountains, totem poles and sculpture
check out the Stanford Athletics website and find a game to attend.

^I remember when my sister was visiting a few years ago and my mom made my younger brother and I wait in the alumni center for the most boring 4 hours of my life, simply because she didn’t know what to do with us. I wish my parents had your kind of foresight.
