so as part of the daily sun's application process...

...I have to submit two articles, each between 800 and 1000 words long.

Any ideas for topics? What would you guys like to read about? I think I remember someone mentioning that the Sun needed political writers.

cornell undergrad's conservatism and the pro-zionist movement within america D:

jux....write about ron paul.

OMG YES...<3 wavebrk and <3 Ron Paul...

your headline can be...THE ANSWER TO 1984...and mention how the other big candidates are all CFR members...

if I write an article about ron paul it will probably have to do with how much he sucks

and who is your candidate? the only dirt fox news could dig about ron paul is that he supported shrimp research in his district...LOL

yeah word let's abolish the federal dept. of education and let mississippi decide what to teach its students (hint: not that heretical darwinism ****)

PS: I haven't chosen a candidate -- I just know that ronnie P. won't make the cut

his education plans are stupid. i never said i supported that. You gotta be a 4th degree neurotic to cut Education. the only reason i support him is because the other candidates are worse. Without ron paul, i'd probably be voting democrat, which would be ridiculously sad.

I don't think "stupid" is adequate

they're cataclysmically stupid

that would still be an understatement. Surprisingly, he is right on all the other issues though.

how is abolishing the department of education entirely stupid? arent you guys always complaining about poor people and their disservice to society...

ron paul believes in state rights...he believes that states should decide what is to be taught...being from Texas I know that the no-child left behind thing is a joke and actually i believe school districts should decide how best to approach their system...

I disagree, but regardless, his stance on education isn't just something you can overlook

that's like voting for a candidate set on bombing London just because you largely endorse the rest of their policies

so we should forego standardization entirely because the NCLB act is grossly underfunded?

have fun learning ID and about how evolution is "just a theory"

i guess i'm ignorant, but would he as president have the power to eliminate it?

Opposition

President Ronald Reagan promised during the 1980 presidential election to eliminate the Department of Education as a cabinet post,[1] but he was not able to do so with a Democratic House of Representatives. In the 1982 State of the Union Address, he pledged, "The budget plan I submit to you on Feb. 8 will realize major savings by dismantling the Department of Education."[2] Throughout the 1980s, the abolition of the Department of Education was a part of the Republican Party platform, but the administration of President George H.W. Bush declined to implement this idea.

In 1996, the Republican Party made abolition of the Department a cornerstone of their campaign promises, calling it an inappropriate federal intrusion into local, state, and family affairs.[2] The GOP platform read: "The Federal government has no constitutional authority to be involved in school curricula or to control jobs in the market place. This is why we will abolish the Department of Education, end federal meddling in our schools, and promote family choice at all levels of learning."[2][3] During his 1996 presidential run, Senator Bob Dole promised, "We're going to cut out the Department of Education."[3]

You do have to keep in mind, that in 1995 they realized, with the $32 billion budget, 89% of the Edu. Department's employees were deemed irrelevant, non-essential, and completely useless. And this was realized under the Clinton Administration.

and like i said...the issue here is libertarianism...would you rather have big brother tell you how to teach your kids...or do it at the local level...

well, admittedly, the folks at the "local level" are completely clueless. If my community's local highschool was crap to begin with, how could you trust the local folks to change that?

They'd just end up getting better at what they do worst.

I like how every thread on CC always ends up a political debate.

does it matter? that is his stated intention, along with abolishing the federal reserve, the CIA, the FAA, the IRS, and NAFTA

fd36: this isn't a "big brother" issue; it's about standardizing our curriculum so that kids in the south don't get stuck learning the "controversy" while their northeastern peers excel

you guys assume that everything will revolutionize once the dept of education is gone...

he's not like bush who just says i hate a law and will change it...i'm sure he has a plan...and i'm sure it is not unlike raegan's...

he has stated that he wont just abolish things, not until the people realize what it is that big government wants to do for them...
