So Basically Change me For Uc's

Warning: It is most probable my grades/EC/whatever else there can be will look crappy on the CC perspective. All I ask is do not be overly sympathetic or harsh. Just Be honest.

So im pretty worried about colleges vs all my friends who do not really care.
I want to be chanced for All the UC's. If there are any colleges that you know i would have a decent shot at that are not UC's please let me know.

I go to a private catholic high school (although myself I am not a Catholic and neither is my family) in California. My graduating class size is around 200 +/- 10. I am in the top 2nd decile (top 20%) which I am not totally ashamed at considering that we have an overwhelming amount of 4.0+ students. Also we are required to take theology classes.

I plan on going into medicine. probably some sort of doctor.

Possible Major: Biology or Pre-Med or something still thinking.

Definite Minor: Mathematics
Maybe even double major with Math? If someone could explain how that goes just tell me pleaee :]

Here is my Current Record:
Freshman Year(just in case one of you reccomends a college that looks at this):

AP Physics B

High School Cumulative: 3.79 UC Cumulative: 3.84

Conflicts:
English 9: This is not something I am sure you guys will believe. So I had a good friend of mine who repeated came over to my house because of his family friend status. We had the same english teacher different periods. We worked on the same subject for our research paper because he was falling behind. So when the papers were in the process of being graded I was accused of helping him cheat on the paper. I presume he probably stole it while using my computer at my house. So i got a strike at my school (3 strikes and your expelled policy) and a 0 on the paper which had an A on it before he graded my friend's paper. Basically screwing me over big time.

Senior year conflict: So I was suppose to go to AP English 12 but Hon string, AP calc and Ap physics collided with it. So i decided to drop Ap english and add on AP gov and ap econ ( which my parents forbade me from doing previously) instead. I got stuck with a bunch of classes i did not want. So thats why my Senior schedule looks odd.

Extra Curriculars:
I have 2 years of JV soccer under my belt from freshman and sophomore year. And according to what I hear in my school I can squeeze in Var Soccer next year.
My parents pretty much screwed me over with their lack of support for my to do sports. I wanted to do cross country starting my sophomore year but my mom screwed me over on that. and my junior year my parents screwed me by saying i am not allowed to do anything by refusing to sign the necessary papers. I will definitely do cross country and soccer if family matters don't screw me again.

I have been playing the bass for 2+ years and picked up the viola about to reach a year of playing it. I am a dedicated musician so I become pretty proficient at instruments, especially during the summer.

I am doing Link Crew during my senior year.

Also I am volunteering at a hospital which is to satisfy service hours but I have a major interest in the volunteering itself. I plan to do at least 70+ hours once this annoying processing phase is done.

Also due to the fact my parents opened up UPS stores last year in april time, i been working there although documented hours on system is not verifiable. Someone tell me if this can be included.

Standardized Tests:
Not the best standardized tester in the world/
AP Bio: (not going to report) 2
APUSH: still waiting

SAT's:
Oct 07 CR 540 W 540 M 700
Mar 08 CR 580 W 580 M 680
I plan on taking it again in Oct 08.

Subjects:
June 08 USH/Bio E/Math2 waiting on them
plan on Bio and Math2 again in Nov 08. I think I will be fine since i have a genuine interest in these subjects.

I plan on ACT in Sept or Oct 08. I can definitely improve a lot in my SAT's School just conflicted a lot with my study time.

I will continue to probably edit in more info as time goes along. Especially with the scores also as my memory gets jogged.

uh oh i messed up the topic name sorry D: should be chance not change.

UCs don’t look at freshman grades, so don’t worry about that. They might see that you got a strike though, so you should explain it..

Cal-Reach; your UC GPA and SAT are a bit low. (4.17)
LA-Reach; ditto above (4.14)
SD-Reach; ditto above (4.06)
D-Match (3.89)
I-Slight Reach/Match (3.92)
M-Safety (3.56)
R-Safety (3.59)
SB-Slight Reach/Match (3.91)
SC-Safety (3.66)

I put the average UC WEIGHTED GPAs of admitted students from 07 in parenthesis. I got it from the UC Guidebook- you can probably get it from your counselor.
In general, try to get some leadership positions and convince your mom that you will need more ECs (like sports) to help you get into college.

While I was reading your post, everything seemed a little disconnected to me. So, when you apply, just make sure you do a good job in creating an overall image of who you are. If you do really well on the essays and have a little bit more community service, you’ll be a good candidate.

@3 thanks now thats gives a much better view.
@4 which schools do you mean i am a good candidate for

While you probably won’t make it into Berkeley, UCLA, or UCSD, I agree that you will likely make it into UCR, UCD, and UCI, all of which excellent schools that will offer an excellent pre-med education. Plus, if you feel like transferring, that is always a possibility…

Also say i someone acheive a 2k+ on the SAT/the rough equivalent of that on the ACT. And some fairly decent (680’s+) on the subject tests. How would that help my situation?
Also lets try not to involve the essay in this chancing.

why wont anyone continue to chance me T.T
Is it because im a subpar student or something

according to these scattergrams from post sometime ago: [AHS c/o 2007](http://www.arcadiachineseparents.org/college.html)

Berkeley, LA, SD=reaches
Irvine, Davis, SB=matches
SC, Riverside, Merced=safeties

And i think that since you’re a cali resident who is eligible for the UCs, you have guaranteed admission to at least one of the campus’s.

Aureonae pretty much summed it up (and she’s right, you’re guaranteed admission to at least 1 of the campuses).

What I recommend you do is write down your ECs/Awards that you’ve received over your high school career so far and organize them in order of importance to you. You’ll have to do that for college apps, and it will also give you a good idea of whether or not you need to enhance them.
Achieving a 2000 or more on the SAT and 680+ on all the SAT Subject Tests you decide to take would improve your chances, but it probably wouldn’t really change which UCs are reaches, matches, safeties, etc.

I agree with the general consensus.

UCB/UCLA/UCSD-Reach, don’t be too hopeful on these at all.

UCD/UCSB/UCI-Match, I think you should get at least one of these three.

UCSC/UCR/UCM-Safety. I’d apply for just one to act as your safety. You are more than likely a surefire acceptance.

Your GPA and test scores aren’t very strong. Try to improve your test scores, and your chances for UCB and UCLA goes up.

Don’t worry about providing the exact hours of your activities, just estimate.

UCB/UCLA: reaches
UCSD: low reach/match
UCD/UCSB/UCI: matches
UCSC/UCR/UCM: safeties

If you are low income and 1st generation to college, UCSD would drop down to in between a reach/match and I feel you would pretty much get into rest of the lower tier UCs.

^ I disagree that UCSD falls into the low reach/match category because after all, the avg. GPA at UCSD is 4.06, a full .2 higher than the OP’s GPA.

hmm so it seems im not in too bad of a situation.
It could be a whole lot worse.
But any recommendations for a specific UC in each of the general categories reach, match, and safeties I should look into considering my probable career passage.

You might want to look up UC A-G requirements. I am under the impression that they want four years of hs english but I could be wrong. If they do then you need to sort that out

you’re gpa is on the low side, but if you boost up your SAT I grades to 2100+ Same goes for SAT II. If you boost up your sat scores, I would say SD is more of a match and so is UCLA engineering school. not to insult ucla engineering but i know some people with rather low stats who got in and other who were rejected from both berkeley and sd but got into la eng.

If you have any awards or other extracurriculars you should write them all out. I wouldn’t try to explain the strike on your record in an essay unless the strike is veyr obviously for cheating. If the strike could have been marked for anything (cheating, vandalism, fighting, or something milder >_>) then I doubt 1 is going to have a huge affect. And from your statement, you don’t think people on CC will believe the story behind it. admission officers will be even less inclined to.

I’m pretty confused about the AP Bio grade and score…I wouldn’t want a doctor that failed his AP Bio Test and got a C in the course (not trying to be discouraging, plz bear with me)…your english and history grades look a little better than your math+sci (to me at least, because I’m looking at the C) and I know you are supposed to think about a major in terms of what your’re interested in, but I don’t see any interest in math/sci, at least not any more than the humanities…just wondering, because that will make a definite difference in college selection (including the UCs)

other than that, i agree with the others, the top three are reach (cal, la, sd) and I would consider not applying to cal or la…adcoms will notice that u r applying to every single UC. sd, davis, irvine, sb, are good match/reaches where you should AT LEAST get into one of those.

@15
Oh I am taking 4 years, just not AP eng

@16
Well it was a pretty difficult course and a crappy teacher, there were several people who fell into my situation as well . Also I really do hate english and can barely tolerate history courses due to the teachers I had.

Alright, as long as you can demonstrate academic interest in your app. Once again, you have an excellent shot at most of the UCs. Now the question for me is whether to concentrate on the most likely “best” (by selectivity and prestige, not actual quality) UC where you have some chance of getting in, SD, or whether to go all out and apply to Cal and LA too. IMHO, I would concentrate on SD and tailor your interview, etc. towards it as looking at your stats, SD would be a close reach if you concentrate on it, whereas if you were to concentrate on Cal or LA or apply to all your app would be diluted and chances are you wouldn’t get into any of the three. Even if you don’t make it into the top three, don’t despair…the UC system is great!

yea. Honestly I really did not get too interested in science till after AP bio.
And I was actually of just only trying for UCSD as my highest school of choice of school in my reach categories.
Apply to all my matches UCD UCI and UCSB
and UCSC as my safety.
Sound good?
Or should i cut out some matches?

you shouldn’t cut yourself short of your matches. And you should think about putting another reach or two, unless you are satisfied with getting into matches and safeties.

I also heard that riverside has a respectable bio major.
