so competitive?

weighted is a 3.8 almost 3.9

My S applied first week in September with a 3.9GPA and a 1290 SAT. Not accepted to UP. Ahhh the mystery of it all!

Gotta be more to this story.

i applied to UP oct 4 with a 3.7 weighted adn 1200 and got into college of engineering at UP. i think part mmight be not putting a sexcond choice. i didnt put any second chgoice and got in, so i think that they are a littlre more leinent if you only put down one.

i applied to UP- Smeal on Oct 10 with a 3.7uw/3.9w and a 1210. i didn't put a second choice and i got a letter from psu asking me to pick 2 other campuses.

Sorry to hear about these rejections. I talked today with a friend who's daughter was recently accepted to UP. Prior to getting the news, her admissions counselor told her to change her major from Smeal (business) to Undergrad Studies. She did (in early Jan) and got an acceptance in the next few days. Her counselor said Smeal is looking for a 1350 or higher SAT score. Not sure if this is true - but it certainly may be true that some programs are much more selective than others. Might be worth a call to see if it's possible to get in with an undeclared major. This is a tough year.

Wrestlersdad, that is surprisingly sucky. I don't get it at all. Which division did he apply to? Where is the logic in this? I wonder if they're easier on out of state applicants so they can get more money. Where else is he thinking of going?

I applied 11/2 with 4.0w/1100 and got in to college of engineering in one month [12/4].

im sorry for sounding so bitter but thats ******** that i got sent to altoona when i have better stats than many that got into UP!

My son applied Nov. 1 and received his letter Saturday. Did not get in to UP but a branch campus with a 3.75 GPA and 1300 SAT. His major was undeclared and we are from out of state.

senior 07 "im sorry for sounding so bitter but thats ******** that i got sent to altoona when i have better stats than many that got into UP!"

you don't know if you had better stats or not. SAT and GPA aren't everything.

it deffininitely seems like these acceptances are all over the place

S's chosen major was Political Science. We realize that sometimes stats may not be enough but in addition to the 3.9 and 1290, I am a past member of the College of Human Development Alumni Society Board. Talk about bitter at this point, I'm bitter.

Plaidfreak - son is probably going to attend Pitt. Has been accepted to Drexel Honors College and Vermont and has applications at Lehigh and Bucknell but even if accepted $$$$$$

wrestler dad - did your son agree to do summer session? I understand this is a big deal at PSU, especially for those with stats on the borderline. I can understand why you're bitter. Have you considered calling and talking to someone in admissions? Or someone you know who might get you connected somehow. Might be worth a shot.
In any case, Pitt is a solid school - with many fans on these boards!

Toneranger - Son did indicate a willingness to do summer. I have mulled over making a contact with admissions. Have many casual contacts at PSU but have always done the alumni thing out of appreciation and loyalty to and for PSU without regard to building relationships for influential purposes. Now parts of me wishes I had!

I would give them a call - can't hurt. Everything they say points to a numbers driven process with emphasis on the GPA so this just doesn't add up for your son.

wrestlerdad ... if I may suggest, a contact with your dean in HHD would not at all be out of order. Issue is that someone with 'clout' needs to push this. Admissions must be made to feel a little pressure, and you cannot do that. It's virtually impossible.

Yours is indeed a different situation, and your son is obviously a stellar candidate. I'd not let this one rest, nor would I allow my ego to deter me ... even if he'd say "I'm not coming after being admitted." You've paid your dues AND given to the U, and they need to know you need a little boost here. Do not allow the #s to deter as in 6 months this will all be history. Think clout and a little push/nudge to admissions. Admission officers are beholding to no one ... aside from the deans, provost, coaches, prexy, etc. Their quotas all will be filled. I urge you to go for this one. Your son and your devotion to your school merit this, imo.

Ask the dean if a meeting might even be possible with the "right" folks. The dean or an assoc dean owe this to you if you've served the U as you have, been a regular, frequent, generous donor, I'm assuming. Now is the time to try and retrieve any chit you may have earned. No ego, nicely.

In large part I think that Penn State is just becoming so competitive because of the incredibly large number of applicants. Another big factor is how many schools students are applying to these days. I am shocked at how many kids tell me they are applying to 12-15 schools. It makes all of the schools look more selective just because they get so many applicants. The strength of so many students is curious--is this all due to tutoring and the like?

wrestlersdad - did you son get into a branch campus or was he completely rejected from PSU?

Rim - S was accepted to Berks. Interestingly enough, most commonwealth campuses have no housing left. One of the disadvantages of being on the admissions bubble is that the houisng at the commonwealths disappears by time you are notified of acceptance
