Recently, I was rejected from Cornell with a 1350/2040 SAT score. I also have 740 Math Level II and 510 Chemistry score. I believe part of my rejection was due to my standardized test scores. Because I have a mediocre GPA (84.68 UW), I feel it is a necessity to have a significantly higher SAT/ACT score for balance.

So, I am asking for everyone's opinion. Do I retake the SAT in January for a 3rd time or take SAT II Chemistry/Spanish in January along with ACT in February. I am soooooooooo confused? Here are the schools I am applying to regular decision:

-Boston University
-Boston College
-Babson College
-Northeastern University
-The College of New Jersey
-University of Michigan
-New York University
-Carnegie Mellon University
-Georgetown University

I don’t think you need to retake anything. No you are “not screwed”.

Just make sure you have some “match” , “safties” on your list. Cornell was a reach school for you , as is UM, Carnegie Mellon and Georgetown. You need realistic “reach” schools, in my opinion.

Yes I am a NJ resident and I was already accepted to Rutgers NB. My intended major is finance/economics, but I would love to double major with some engineering (just don’t know what kind would be best yet).

My son is a double engineering major (areospace and mechanical) and he has a set schedule each semester, no time for any electives and only 4 or 5 required classes outside his major, taken freshman year and online over a summer). Don’t know how you will be able to do it unless you plan on a 5-6 year plan, at least.

I think business is one of the toughest majors to be accepted into at college. Much competition. FYI- friends son was accepted into UM (business though I think it was conditional, or had to apply into business program after first year???) but rejected at the top SUNY? Go figure. They may like that you are OOS!!! He had better GPA but lower SAT’s than you.

Maybe add Lehigh to your list…good finance and engineering depts…still could be borderline…SAT looks good but GPA looks low…could be worth a shot.

Wait, you have a middling GPA and a 2040 and it came as a surprise that you didn’t get into Cornell. why?

Certainly retake the SAT if you can do considerably better. But as long as your rank is in the top 25%, you should have a good shot at BU, Babson and Northeastern. So if you’d be happy with one of them (and can afford them) or Rutgers, you can stop here.

I agree that you should focus on best match schools. Also, that double major would be tough for someone with perfect scores. Not enough courses shared between the majors and both challenging.

At Cornell, you’re competing with students with much higher scores. Look up schools where your scores fall into the middle of the range for accepted students and also apply to a couple you know you’ll get accepted to.

You will be happiest at a school that challenges you without leaving you constantly struggling. Its not just getting in. Its thriving once you get there. You can always transfer up if you land a bit too low.

So, in regards to the SAT and SAT IIs/ACT, what do you recommend?

@Waverly, I was not surprised just disappointed about the recognition. I applied knowing it was my reach, but it hurt me knowing that I was not defered.

My daughter is going to major in Accounting/Finance and got accepted to Rutgers Business School. You will get into CNJ; they have a great business program.

Having looked at many business programs, I know University of New Haven in Connecticut has a great business program. It may not be a reach school, but you will get in with you SATS/GPA. If you apply now, you will get Early Decision II which will get you decent scholarship.

You know what they say–be careful of what you ask for. Cornell may be your reach, but if you had gotten accepted and it wasnt for you, think of the disappointment there. CNJ is a really good school–very competitive academically. My daughter is not applying because she would only be a walk on for the sport she wants to play (yes, Division III!!)

Dont be discouraged. Popoagle had it right. If a school doesnt accept you, it might be because it would be too challenging for you. Try UNH. Campus is beautiful, academics are great (tons of majors, great programs) or go with the list you have. It is a great list!!

Could I also get a definite answer to my question: Do I retake the SAT in January for a 3rd time or take SAT II Chemistry/Spanish in January along with ACT in February.

I feel I could could definitely raise my score if I just put off time to study and take practice tests. However, do I retake SAT or take Subject tests? That is the question troubling me.
