I guess this thread really has no point to it, except that I'm really curious as to why a school wouldn't consider work experience at all. It actually makes me a little mad too. I mean, really, I've worked every Sunday and Wednesday for four years (summer & school year) and its affected what I can do as far as ECs are concerned. To think that a school like Dartmouth wouldn't even CONSIDER work experience just seems outlandish.

Maybe this is a mistake, but from what ive seen they dont. Can anyone confirm or at least explain why they dont take it into consideration? I'm surprised no one's brought it up before...

curious why you think they don’t, because I think they do. put up your stats. i believe they consider the entire package.

here’s one source where they say work experience is not considered…

[College Search - Dartmouth College - Admission](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Id really hate for this to become another chance thread…but if you really want to know, i wouldnt mind posting my stats

That stuff on the collegeboard site is bunk in my opinion. Some careless admissions person selects a few checkboxes to satisfy collegeboard. I firmly believe that the thing that matters in your application is the total package and the way it’s presented.

I have some “fun” work experience - freelance programming that I do online to relax and focus, but I know that’s not the highlight of my app, and it’s not the reason why I got a likely letter.

Dartmouth looks for a strong point in an app I believe. My interviewer said that the kid two years ago that got a likely letter for Dartmouth was interesting to them because of his leadership awards, the kid last year who got a likely letter was interesting to them because of his research experience, and for me…well…I’m guessing research too although I haven’t been told explicitly.

I agree that work experience should be treated like a significant EC though.

C’mon, I’m positive they consider work experience! However, I have absolutely no work experience (or common sense for that matter).

they most definitely consider work experience! in fact, i think work experience is a big boost, but only if you work at lot (like 15+ hours). if you work around 5 hours/week, it just feels like another EC. all my interviewers seemed to be a lot more interested in my work experience than the clubs that i do at school because more people have a bunch of clubs/EC’s than have work. as long as you show that you fill up your day with meaningful things, it doesn’t matter if its work or EC’s. it doesn’t prove anything, but im working 2 jobs and i received a likely letter :)

I think it is more likely that an after-school job is considered an EC, but they aren’t giving you special recognition for having work experience. Don’t worry about it.

On the Dartmouth Admission Profile on their website, it says work experience is not important. However, this could be a mistake. They also said that the peer evaluation is mandatory on the website even though they consider your application complete without one. They need to update their information, that’s all.

ok, sounds good…

everyone seems to be making a lot of sense…
It’s just frustrating on weeks like this when Im scheduled to work for 16 hours in addition to school, ECs, etc and for colleges to see it as “not important”.

Not that it really matters though, since im pretty much bound for ivy league rejection (“A” student, moderately high test scores, a wide assortment of activities, white, male, college prep school) The only thing i have going for me is living in the midwest…
