So do OOS or IS students have a better chance?

I know this has already been asked but the last thread didn't really reach a conclusion. I assume OOS because I read an article stating that UW needs that OOS tuition money due to budget cuts. So....thoughts? Or answers?

I live in Washington and I remember UW being on the news a few years ago because they were accepting a lot of out of states over in states. But if you look at their freshman profile from last fall 67% of the freshman were Washington residents. I think it is a good hook if you are out of state and you most likely will get in if you have the right stats. But I feel like Washington residents have a little bit of a better chance just because everyone in Washington applies there and it is the most popular school. I think UW would much rather residents go there than to WSU, their rival school. But that is just my opinion as a Washingtonian.

There is no difference. The acceptance rates are almost identical, as are the statistics.

Lauren is right. There was an uproar a while back (2008 maybe?) because UW was rejecting insanely qualified IS students in favor of the higher paying OOS students. As far as I know, steps have been taken to counteract what could have resulted in a horrible OOS:IS admissions dis-proportionality. They’ve added more instate slots in the past few years; but as a whole, UW is growing so it somewhat nullifies that change. There are also a significant number of international students, which I think helps pay the deficit from the budget cuts.

tl;dr: IS and OOS are basically the same. IS has a slight advantage, but International really takes care of the higher tuition. There’s no significant need for OOS to become the majority, and last time they tried- the media went berserk.

(This is all my opinion, so I’m probably not right on some parts)

DEFINITELY IN STATE, I heard Governor Inslee is making a pledge to force UW to accept more IS students this year

Wouldn’t they accept more out of state students then to compensate for the lack of spending on education in WA State?

And wouldn’t Gov. Inslee wait until the 2014-2015 Application Cycle to enforce any new rules?

Most likely, yes. UW’s obviously already began looking at applications, so it’s really hard for them to change direction mid-cycle.

Regardless, there’s nothing you can do to change your chances at this point. Stressing over it will just make you go insane. Chill

sorry, I didn’t mean to cause problems.

You’re not! You just seem to worry a lot (as do I) and I think you would be better off focusing on the now. However, we all have a license to freak out in mid-march.
