Hi all! I’m still choosing between Brown and Swarthmore (but Im leaning towards Brown) and I am going to ADOCH this coming week. I already reserved a train ticket, but I wanted to know if we have to do something special to get on the Brown reserved cars (there was no available informtaion for this on the amtrak site). Also, how many of you plant to take the 174? I look forward to meeting all of you!

I think what I like about Brown most are the people. Every single person I have met from Brown has been warm, kind, friendly, and interesting. I hope that I have the same experience at ADOCH.

Also, does anyone know about Brown’s philosophy department? I know the course they offer, but how does the strenght of the department compare to a school like Swarthmore’s?

Brown's philosophy department is quite strong, and has traditionally ranked well. I know very little about Swarthmore's program, but I am willing to wager that they have much less breadth in their philosophy course offerings. I've compared course catalogs for Amherst/Williams to Harvard/Brown, and the difference was substantial. I would deduce a similar difference to exist between Swarthmore and Brown. One site I have found to be of particular help, http://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/ seems to indicate that Swarthmore's undergraduate program is strong. I think you will do well to check out the site as well as other credible sources which you may find linked from it.

I reserved seats from New Haven (I'm coming from Bulldog Days at Yale). Do I ask for a Brown car when I board or do I have to reserve a seat on one?

I don't think we need to reserve the cars. I'm just planning on following a big crowd of people that look like their going to Brown! I am sure there are still many seats left. Good luck and see you all soon!
