Commuting will not be much of a problem from the Shoreland. If it were, it wouldn't be such a popular dorm. There are bus complaints, but overall it's not much of an issue. Broadview is quite different than Shoreland in terms of atmosphere. Shoreland is probably the most social dorm with the most conventional college students. Broadview, since it has singles with private bathrooms, draws some of the less social students. It's also much smaller and has a bit of an insular feel, I think. I have two pretty good friends from Broadview, so this is what I've heard from them. The distance is a little shorter from Broadview than from Shoreland, but you'll still want to take the bus to class.

Another plus, a year in Shoreland may give one an edge in choosing a room in the new dorm the following year.

Yeah that is very true!!! It's coming up really fast, and from what I hear its supposed to be amazing when it's done. The one thing that I'm kinda unhappy about is the fact that BJ residents will have to walk outside the building in order to go to the food court... that's not cool.

Well, Ive been looking into a single room/private bathroom...so Shoreland first choice followed by BJ and MP? Is this okay? I'm sending in my housing thing tomorrow so...help please! ^_^

If I should switch one of those with Broadview, please tell me

BJ has communal co-ed (on some floors) bathrooms, but many singles, and from what it looks like the bathrooms are really only shared by a small number of people. Max P = very little chance of a single, Shoreland also little chance of a single. I stayed in Shoreland this week for my prospie tour and liked the freedom of large rooms/private bathrooms... it seemed like it is the most social (still on UofC standards, though :) ) atmosphere.

You aren't likely to get a single with a private bathroom in any of those dorms as a first year. I don't know of any first years with singles in Shoreland (minus those who had roommate issues of one sort or another), all first years in Max are in double suites, and BJ doesn't have private bathrooms. If you want a single and a private bathroom for sure, you need to pick Broadview.

How is Broadview though, community-wise? Pros and Cons? I'm putting either Broadview or Shoreland as my first choice.

okay i just went on the virtual tour and I am back to square one! Put Broadview or Shoreland as my first choice? And what IS my third choice? MP or BJ? =*(

They are very different atmospheres. Shoreland is a wild card because you could get an amazing room or a forced triple. No matter what you get in the Shoreland, though, you will have a very social experience. Broadview is quieter and tends to attract a different type of student overall. Shoreland students get preference for the new dorm. Max has Bartlett which is widely recognized as the best dining hall on campus, and it is also very central (near the library, gym, and frats). BJ is pretty cool looking and has a quiet atmosphere. Also look up the Maroon article on dorms. There should be a link to it on the front page of the website.

hmm... private bathroom vs. social atmosphere scratches head

I think I'm putting Broadview as first and Shoreland as second. The third one I have yet to decide, but between MP and BJ, what would YOU choose? Single room please =P doesnt MP not have single rooms though? How are the community bathrooms of BJ?

Max has single rooms but not many. Incoming first years are not placed in singles, and few rising second years get singles. I've only seen one BJ bathroom, and it was gross, but it was also on a men's only floor. I'm choose Max, since that's where I live now. I don't mind being in a double, though, and I'm actually staying in a double next year even though I could probably get a single somehow if I wanted to. It's nice coming home in Max to a suite of four people. Chicago is not as overtly social as other schools, and I think having multiple roommates really helps with that. Broadview, though insular, is relatively social within the dorm, I think, since everyone has singles. In other dorms this may not be the case.

Any onpinions on Pierce?

I was pretty attracted to it when I read about it on the dorm-preview website.

Pros- Cons- ?

Ew, gross bathrooms >_<

But I'm a girl, so who knows ^_^

Broadview first, Shoreland second...still debating my third!

Putting MP as my third :)

Good decision, Dahlia.

People I know in Pierce seem to like it, and that's pretty much all I can say. It doesn't have any particular reputation on campus.

Oo Ooo Oooo Oo Ooooo Oooooooooooo
Oo Ooo Oo O O O Ooooo O Oooooooooooo
Oo Ooo Oo

I sent my papers off today! Broadview, Shoreland, and MP. Let's see what I get though...hopefully not a triple :X
