So hey, Northwestern...

Hi, I've just decided to apply to Northwestern regular decision this year - it's a pretty huge reach, but why not apply? Doesn't hurt too badly (other than the $65 fee). And if I'm rejected, I'm rejected.

So a few things...

Stats...that's where I'm weak. Am a complete failure? No, but compared to all of you, most definitely. I've got about a 3.8 something GPA unweighted, and a 3.97 weighted, and a 2080 on the SAT. However, my CR+M score is only a 1310 (ouch) - my high point on the SAT was a 770 on the writing section.
I know NU is pretty tough when it comes to stats. Yeah, they do admit kids with lower stats, but...how often? My ECs are pretty good - president of human rights club at my school, managing editor of school paper, some pretty neat internships, and published in national newspaper. But...yeah. Thoughts?

Also, I'm applying to the college of arts and sciences - is that easier to get into than, say, the engineering school? How does this work?

And SAT subject tests...I don't test well, but will be taking my subject tests soon. They "recommend" but do not require SAT subject tests, but let's get real - is it one of those things where you basically have to sent subject tests because that's just what everyone does?

@Marinozai Wow haha I’m in the exact same boat as you. 1270 CR + M and a 790 on W. And I’m applying to Weinberg A&S. I, too, am wondering if I should take the subject tests or not. Anyone else’s input on this would be super helpful for me as well.

Current student here…didn’t submit any SAT subject tests, my SAT combined CR+M score was just above 1400 (most of the points from CR). They say they want a minimum 1400 combined between CR+M ideally (was told this at a talk from an admissions counselor before I was admitted). Just a few quick points…hope that is somewhat helpful

I didn’t submit any subject tests and I was just admitted during the Early Decision round :)

@uppersanddowners What was your SAT I score?

I have 1 kid admitted RD, and 1 ED. Neither took SAT subject tests, and neither interviewed.

Good luck to all.

@nugraddad - Congratulations! I’m glad to hear neither did the subject tests. How were the rest of their applications?

Marinozai - S & D both applied to McCormick. Both were 4.0 unweighted, and +5 weighted, from a suburban Chicago school that sends @ 1 -2 per year to NU. One kid had @ 10 APs, all 5s, so hats off to them and the teachers. Both played varsity sports, and lots of other ECs and were recognized for a top 20 student in the school. One kid had a 30 ACT and the other a 33.

Like you said, you may as well go for it… let someone else say no, not you! Good luck!

show demostrated interest and youre in

Dunno122, that makes no sense… Showing interest doesn’t get you in for sure, and it really on matters mostly for ED. With a 1310 (Marinozai) and a 1270 (Jackechan) it’s not likely you get in, but you might as well apply and hope for the best.

Yeah, and “demonstrated interest” is a very vague term. There really aren’t many ways to demonstrate interest unless you apply ED.

I agree - it’s very unlikely that I’ll get in, but why not apply?

so is it easier to get into cas than engineering?

Yeah, it is. Not by much, but it is.

ED admit here, only submitted one subject test (and it was a 710 in US History, where history is supposedly my strong suit). My superscored SAT I was 1540, but I had a lower GPA.

Can someone tell me about econ/iems. if i wanted to double major would i apply to mccormick or weinburg?

In almost any (I think all) double major case including Weinberg then you’d be in the other school.

You would be in McCormick for an IEMS/econ double major.

For all inter-school double majors, you have to be enrolled in the non-WCAS school.

I wouldn’t worry so much about your test scores, but I would definitely stress how much you did in your extracurriculars! If one area is low, make your strengths shine. Good luck!

Yeah, my ECs are great. I know that lots of people say not to worry too much about test scores, but it seems like some colleges like Northwestern are - for rankings, etc.
