So high up...

Ok, for once, not talking rankings. This might seem really random, but does anyone know any colleges in the mountains? (any region of US) See, I am looking for safety schools, and if the school is not going to be as academically strong as I would like (aka, Ivies), it might as well be pretty. :) So... any decent schools out there in a beautiful location?

off the top of my head uc boulder and middlebury

middlebury's on my list as a reach, sort of, with only 24% admittance

Dartmouth and Williams, along with Middlebury, are the classic New England "mountain schools". But if Midd is a reach, then these others are harder. Might consider Colgate and Colby, which are a bit easier to get into, but which seem to appeal to many of the same applicants.

yes, colby sounds like a reasonable safety...

University of Utah. The campus is at an elevation of about 4500 feet and sits right at the foot of a wall of even taller mountains - part of the Rockies. Very nice view, especially when they are snow-capped.

No discussion of "mountain schools" would be complete without acknowledging Adams State College, a small public LAC in Alamosa, Colorado. Elevation ~ 7,000 feet, with 14,000 ft peaks surrounding. Awesome cross-country team.

Sewanee the University of the South

The Air Force Academy

University of Montana at the foothills of the Rockies.

UVA, VT, James Madison, Washington & Lee are all great schools and are in beautiful mountain settings

University of Denver

I second Colgate. Amherst isn't that high up, but has an AMAZING view of a valley (but it's not a safety).

UVA is not in the mountains.

What would you call those big bumps in the ground all around Charlottesville? Maybe they are not mountains like you have out west, but it is a beautiful, hilly area. Afton Mountain, one of the worst interstate mountain passes around is about 10 miles from C'ville.

Thanks for the great suggestions! Now I just need to make myself narrow down my list of thirty schools. :)

Montana State if you also like skiing

not really looking for state schools - I'm more a fan of the smaller, more privaate type.

Definitely would want W&L in Va, then. The others I mentioned are large schools.

Depending on your stats, there are a few other small private schools in the mountains of Va, some of which may be familiar to you, and are easier to get into than W&L: Emory and Henry, Roanoke College, Lynchburg College and Bridgewater College. I don't know too much about them, other than they are small and in the mountains.
