Northface is my life...I've had Columbia jackets...but Northface is so much better. I have two...one is my winter jacket (the puffy one) and the other is a shell which I wear on short trips because it looks awesome. The problem with Northface is that it's really expensive.

Ugg boots do not provide good traction. Get real boots for when it's actually icy.

Jan is the coldest. It should be better from now on. :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago

This weekend the weather was 0-10 degrees :) And it'll probably continue that way until mid-March.

Oh, and it's right by the lake so it's colder usually.

An Alum steared us away from UGG boots, explaining that they were water resistant not water repellant and did not do well when icy, or slushy. She recommended the rainboots, and water repellant after-ski boots with good traction on the soles. I am glad I was able to share the wisdom given us.APOL-a mom.

On average, I'd say that there are 2 weeks in Jan. where it is very cold (due to the combination of cold temps and wind chill) and another week or so in Feb.

The rest of the time - it's not so different from the NE.

Are you talking about the plastic looking (usually colorful) rain boots? Do they have any insulation? Also, what do you mean by water repellant after-ski boots? My D and I are trying to get some of this stuff on sale now!

BRRRR I'm sick from school right now, and I never get sick, so yes, it's cold up here!

-7, baby!

I can't wait for spring, or a trip to Florida. But I'd still go to Northwestern, cold weather can't deter me!

Hi--My DD looked for after-ski boots that had tags marked "water-repellant/waterproof". They were tall boots to her knee. She bought them at an outlet near a ski resort(Truckee,Ca near Squaw Valley). Her rainboots were tall also-to her knee-rubber boots. They did not have 'insulation', but were able to have her jeans go on the inside. She bought them in Chicago at Nordstrom. She waited to buy her rainboots in Chicago so she could see what type the other students were wearing. I hope this helps-APOL-a mom

I hear it's going to be 50 degrees on Monday (like it was a couple of weeks ago).

While the Midwest usually gets the brunt of the cold front sweeping in from Canada, it's not like the rest of the country is immune from it (it snowed north of LA a couple of days ago).

I flew in here Thursday night to visit my son....it was unbelievably cold. Has improved since then...today was almost balmy. ;)

yesterday in minneapolis it was raining and the temp was around 40. today the high is -4. tonight a low of -16 and windchill close to 40 below zero(my ski meet was canceled today because of the cold). Those nasty temps are coming straight for chitown(but not quite as severe probably).

I will be back in Chicago for few days next month. I'd be happy with the Feb average:

Average Weather for Chicago, IL - Temperature and Precipitation

I don't think I am asking for too much, considering I am living in CA. :)

On average, it should be 6 degrees warmer next month. So the worst is almost over. ;)
