So how did you do with Financial Aid - it's posted

I’m really concerned… I’m an ED applicant and neither Where Am I or Enrolling has any of my financial aid results!
It doesn’t appear that I am missing any documents. This is killing me!
I sent my IDOCS a day late… maybe that’s it.

Fuut - does it say anything has been mailed.

So if I have nothing under the financial aid part of the Where Am I website then should I call/email admissions? Plus I can’t login to the other site presumably because I’m not enrolled

No - I suspect Carnegie is sending out the FA in waves. Most likely you will see it some day this week. If not by Friday AM, then I would call.

Do you have a date listed: ALL the way at the bottom of the screen. This is what my son has:

Financial Aid Documents Sent
Date Sent Document
28-mar-2012 Financial Aid Eligibility Letter

Klei- Nope. They haven’t sent any financial aid documents my way. :s

I talked to the Financial Aid office today and they said that they are working on all of the packages through this week and will have everything sent out by Friday!

Mine was mailed out on Mar 28, and the letter came in the mail today.

I also called the FA Office this morning to ask about matching offers from peer institutions. Your mailed copy of your award should have a form to fill out. Mail or fax it in along with copies of other offers from schools. The earliest you’ll hear back about the appeals/reviews is April 17 or 18.

April 17/18?? really?? ugh. I was hoping to get it over with in a day or 2 by simply calling the financial aid office and asking/begging them to match my offer from RPI or at least some of it.

Same here. I called and asked them about Duke. You can fax/mail in the documents at any time, but that’s the earliest response date apparently. They don’t start looking at appeals for another week at least. CMU’s package gave me a lot of loans… and there’s a good 13k difference in the award itself between CMU and Duke. The FA person I spoke to told me that they know their awards are oftentimes lower than other schools so they usually give more money afterwards. Also, she explained it to me that it’s basically free money: it’s given for all 4 years so it’s not as if they’ll give you a nice, new award this year and screw you over the next 3 (at least that’s a relief). I’m going to send in a letter with my appeal… Keeping my fingers crossed.

D’s award was much, much lower than we expected, so CMU’s now off the table. She was leaning toward Kenyon anyway because small school/small town better suits her style. Lower total cost and good merit aid at Kenyon. She’ll look at CMU again for grad school. Good luck to everyone!

Award was the worst I’ve seen yet. Taking out loans is one thing, but CMU’s package is simply ridiculous. Not happening. Brandeis, I might be coming your way?

The package is apparently going to be available online tonight at 12 01

Not that good at all  I’d much rather go with Michigan’s $5,000/yr loans than CMU’s $30,000/yr.

Hey guys, I got a pretty rough package, but CMU still gave me a bit of a grant (plus a lot of loans).

I have a question though–if the CMU grant I received is more than the amount of a scholarship I got for a different university, does that mean I cannot petition/appeal the financial aid at all?

@quest21:

Well they won’t be able to match any offers since their award is greater than your other schools. I suppose the only way you could appeal is if you had some sort of other financial circumstance such as recent unemployment, medical bills, death in family, etc. But you wouldn’t use the aid comparison form that came with your financial aid package. You’ll probably have to call the FA Office and explain your situation or write them a letter with supporting documents.

I was quite worried when I heard that CMU only guarantees a match to EFC for ED applicants. I live with my mom only, and she makes about 11k a year(although she also receives untaxed tips under the table - she’s a waitress.) Last year, she won 60k in the lottery, and then wasted it lol. So her total taxed income for last year was 73k, much more than her actual income. We get government help, food stamps, health insurance, etc. So when the EFC was about 9,000, I was quite worried that if they wouldn’t match it, I wouldn’t be able to attend. Fortunately, they did match it(42k CMU + Government grants, and 7k in loans) which is still a bit much out of my pocket, but if I get a part-time job over the summer/winter/spring breaks and ask my father(who wasn’t going to help) to give something, I can do it. Next year, when my mother’s income goes back to normal I should probably get a few thousand more, and it would be much less of a problem.

CMU landed exactly where I thought it would. They’re 12K off the best offer our D received. They’re also double the average offer from the others. They are very smart to low-ball applicants as a small percentage will “bite,” at the original offer and when they improve the contested offers it makes them seem like they’re accomodating, snagging even more applicants. Not a bad stratedgy. The only time I see it backfiring is for those students who are not 85% sure they want to attend CMU and have better offers financially from other comparible schools. My Ds top offer does not come from a peer school so I don’t see them matching it dollar for dollar. We’ll give it a try and see what happens, however April 18th is a long time to wait for a decision, My D might have moved on by then.

Downeaster Dad - I know - it does seem like a strategy doesn’t it. I would suggest to try and ask for more aid. Also ask for an expedited response. It can’t hurt especially if you think your D may move on.

Our FA package was shocking - and not for good reasons. DS really wants to go, but the package doesn’t even come close. Our EFC is about $10,000 - and when the grant and loan money (a SUBSTANTIAL amt. of it is loan $) is added up, we would still have to come up with over $29,000!!! Where’s that supposed to come from? Smaller schools, with smaller endowments have offered more. Not looking forward to breaking the news to DS this afternoon. :-(

Surprisingly got more aid than expected (CMU grant), must have been from some merit cause no way I would’ve gotten that much from need-based
