So how do you like Tulane so far?

Yeah, I just wanted to see how much fun you guys are having, and how you like Tulane so far...sort of compare notes, so to speak. Is there a lot to do around campus?

How hot is the student body?

Discuss.

I'm curious too. This school seems pretty interesting, I'm def. applying here.

students are generally attractive- although there are a few egregious exceptions. however, most of them are too stuck up or jappy to talk to you, and therefore the above is simply an annoying tease- unless you are good at pulling the whole shallow club talk routine.

your freshmen year at tulane is remarkable. i feel like i had ten times the amount of fun that my high school friends at other colleges had. in retrospect, i'd most definitely do it again.

your freshmen year at tulane is remarkable. i feel like i had ten times the amount of fun that my high school friends at other colleges had.

My son had this exact same reaction. His freshman "year" really was only the 2nd semester and "Lagniappe" since he was a Hurricane student, but I guess he made up lost ground very quickly :)

Yeah, this is the type of thread that I would have wanted to see when I was applying as a transfer, earlier this year - instead of the perpetual "chances" threads. :)

@armcp:

Were you talking about "most of them" as being the attractive folks (i'm having fun here), or most of the student body as a whole.

I'm trying to figure out of there's lots of jappy people at Tulane, by asking this...

Are you at all familiar with U Miami, Fla? Tulane is the Miami of Louisiana, except w/o the Cubans.

@ Mercymom

No...i've never really heard about or been to U Miami (FL)

But i'll take a guess that if its like the rest of Miami, it's really "showoff-y" ?

mercymom:
One thing that S loves about Tulane is New Orleans. It's so quirky, with a very unique soul, that just oozes out of the place. The people there are remarkably friendly (and I live in the South). I'm not familiar with U of Miami, but know that my D is applying there for grad school. I would be a really happy camper if there are indeed comparisons between the environs of U of Miami to Tulane/New Orleans!

Somehow, what little I do know of Miami doesn't seem to provide that same kind of "feel". I'd love to hear your comments about other comparisons....
thanks!

Bear in mind, I went to Tulane and loved it, but some people hate the very things I liked and/or enjoyed. At any rate, there are lots of rich kids at Tulane and, imho, a much larger % of Jewish kids than your average school, at least in the South. Therefore, more "japs", a term I had never heard before going to college. My impression is that it's still that way. Positive or negative depends on you.

In a way the Cuban population of Miami the city gives it a special flavor much like the way the French and Creole families of NOLA do that city. They are different from each other, but still uniquely unlike the average american city. Positive or negative again up to you.

So I think both schools have a large infusion of east coast yankees with money embedded in the South, mixed in with a unique indigenous culture, and when you add in the Jewish-ness and mix with a certain laid back air of work hard, play hard, the campuses are very similar. You will probably either love or hate them both.

btw - my H went to U Miami for grad school and it is much more serious and intense at that level. still with a large % of yankess, lots of ivy leaque ug degrees. it attracts smart intense students who want sun, water, and no snow. an excellent, excellent place for grad school.

One more btw. I grew up in NOLA and the city had a fairly large % of Jewish families. Unbeknownst to me, this was, I think unusual for the south, so the student population at Tulane didn't strike me as odd or different. I thought all cities were predominantly Catholic and Jewish until I met my H who's from the midwest. It was years of visiting his parents before I laid eyes on a Catholic church, and the synagogues were few and far between. It may be the unusual nature of NOLA itself that attracts the students it gets. jmho.

Once when I was talking to a Tulane friend who's sister went to U Miami, I opined that Miami is the Tulane of Florida, and the friend totally agreed with me. If you get it, you get it.

tulane is an amazing school you will love it...very strong reputation in the south and in the northeast...it is definitely known nationally

Jayhawk, glad to hear it's going well for you. I know you must be busy, but can you comment on some of your positive experiences so far? We've heard some disparaging comments regarding extremely heavy drinking, easy academics, cliquish students - it would be nice for current HS seniors to hear the "other side" regarding academics, drinking, social life and friendliness of the student body, from a new student who is not only having a positive experience, but if I'm not mistaken, has transferred in from another school. Thanks, in advance.

Tulane is great I couldn't be happier with my choice of coming here from out-of-state this year. Naturally I was slightly apprehensive coming in not knowing anyone, but then you realize everyone is in the same boat as you and are really open to making new friends here.

I know your question wasn't addressed to me ERPMom, but I feel I can answer those questions. Most of the stories you heard about the "extremely heavy" drinking were probably regarding the first week of school, where there were parties every night because there were no classes. Now that school is in session, it's calmed down. Granted you can still go out and drink almost every night, but I wouldn't begin to say that is typical.

Realistically, most people go out Friday and Saturday for sure and some go out one night during the school week depending on course work and exams. Some go out more, some go out less. It's fun down here no doubt, but most of the students are still able to keep a good balance between their work and social life.

From my experience, I would say the student body isn't very cliquish. Everyone on my floor gets along really well and we can all just talk in our floor's lounge without people being excluded. I'd say if you're open to going out and meeting new people here, they will be open to meeting you as well.

As far as academics, I enjoy all but one of my classes, so I really can't complain. The work is challenging, but manageable as long as you put in the effort.

Hope that helps.

Going back to the original questions posed:
The student body is very good looking. I doubt you will be disappointed.

There are plenty of things to do around campus, socially. All the frats are on one road and within walking distance of each other, as well as several bars. If you want to go to Bourbon or downtown, though you have to take a cab.

I'm having a great time. Really couldn't be happier with my choice of coming here.

wingo; could you please comment on the gay life at tulane, and in NOLA in gneral for that matter? thanks a lot bro!

Lotttts of rich people that can blow $100 of dad's money in a weekend and not think anything of it.
Academics--mediocre thus far. I was expecting better. Though I suppose that's hit or miss depending on the professor.
Great city! You'll never be bored.

Reflect wingo on th academic aspects, please?

Personally, I have had a really good experience in all of my classes except for calc. My econ and ecology professors are some of the best teachers I've ever had. There is some variance between professors, but out of the five classes I'm taking, I only have one professor that I don't like and you'll find at least one bad professor no matter where you go.

As for gay life, there is a huge festival every year called Southern Decadence , which is a week long and from what I heard is like gay Mardi Gras. At Tulane I know there is a pretty big program (I forgot the name) for gay students.

Tulane is really interesting. For myself, it is DEFINITELYYY not a fit haha. So, be very very very wary when you pick colleges that you fit in with the gen. population of the school, or you might find your friends really spoiled, rich, and drunk too lol.

So they say every school has partying; yes. Of course. Tulane though has it in such big amounts i'm not quite sure why it's not like the highest party school; i don't know more than prob 4 people that don't drink (and i do include myself b/c i only tried it out like 4 times lol. andi don't plan on getting wasted.)

Academics are mehhhhhh, kind of a repeat of high school (Pt. II though.) It's weird lol. I don't feel very challenged, which is good in some weays (for gpa) and bad in others. If you love hearing about alcohol, drunk this, puke that, come here. But, if you want non-superficial people who have a conscience and depth to their personality, seriously look elsewhere.

and yes, there area LOT of jewish people here! (myself included lol.) And hillel is a huge thign here. I don't kno what else to say other than some people love it here, some people hate it, and some people just don't just care (b/c they're too hi to know the difference. haha)

wingo82, r u thinking of mosaic?
